FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) — An Iraq War veteran being treated for mental illness was the gunman who opened fire at Fort Hood, killing three people and wounding 16 others before committing suicide, in an attack on the same Texas military base where more than a dozen people were slain in 2009, authorities said.

Within hours of the Wednesday attack, investigators started looking into whether the man’s combat experience had caused lingering psychological trauma. Fort Hood’s senior officer, Lt. Gen. Mark Milley, said the gunman had sought help for depression, anxiety and other problems.

The watch time on anti-depressants is when the depressed person starts feeling more active - that’s when they often kill themselves. Once they get past that, the drugs can work wonders. I don’t think they depress “morals.” They do relieve relentless, pointless guilt associated with obsessive compulsiveness but do not turn people into moral idiots. Unless they were like that originally.

The biggest complainers are generally the laziest.
Biggest complainers are usually the worst offenders, not necessarily laziest.

well thought out observations. SSRI’s were a lifesaver for me 10 yrs. ago. There is nothing like the helplessness of Anxiety, depression and panic disorder caused by genetic and environmental factors. I never had the urge to kill or any other aggressive tendency. I just wanted to feel normal again.

God bless you, Second! Depression is a truly evil illness. But it can be controlled with proper treatment and drugs. Sadly, I agree that genetics play a major role in mental illness.

Mariel Hemingway, btw, has dedicated her life to spreading the news about the connection between genetics and suicide. With her family history, she should know.

He was in Iraq for four months in a “non-combat job,” according to the news accounts from Ft. Hood last night. Why didn’t the Boston Glob know this?

There is speculation that he was trying for years to get a PSTD designation, but hadn’t succeeded. So he could have decided to show everyone who hadn’t believed him that he really was crazy, getting revenge at the same time. Of course, the true story will never come out because he is dead, unlike Hassan, who was revealed to be a genuine jihadi, even though the Obama administration didn’t believe it.
