The 'political gaffe of the year' might just hand GOP the Iowa Senate seat

The only Democrat running in the primary for the open Senate seat in Iowa made a spectacular gaffe before a roomfull of trial lawyers in Texas.

Standing next to a table full of booze, Rep. Bruce Braley insulted farmers, praised lawyers, and belittled the second most popular political figure in Iowa.

Iowa Rep. Bruce Braley, a Democrat running for Senate, was caught on videotape disparaging fellow Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley as “a farmer from Iowa who never went to law school” — comments that later drew an apology from the candidate.

The video, posted online Tuesday afternoon by GOP opposition research firm America Rising, shows Braley speaking to what the group described as a group of lawyers at a fundraiser in Texas.

“If you help me win this race, you may have someone with your background, your experience, your voice — someone who’s been literally fighting tort reform for 30 years in a visible and public way on the Senate Judiciary” Committee, said Braley, a trial lawyer by training who is running to replace Iowa Democratic Sen. Tom Harkin. “Or you might have a farmer from Iowa who never went to law school, never practiced law, serving as the next chair of the Senate Judiciary. Because if Democrats lose the majority, Chuck Grassley will be the next chair of the Senate Judiciary.”

Braley is the sole Democratic candidate in a race that could, as he alludes to in the video, help determine which party controls the Senate after November. He faces whoever emerges from a crowded Republican primary field that includes state Sen. Joni Ernst, businessman Mark Jacobs and former U.S. Attorney Matt Whitaker.

Better yet maybe Lawyers should be subject to the same restrictions that Lib states place on guns.

Maybe, but the farm community DOESN’T forget. Braley truly stuck the knife in his butt on this one.

japan had a law that limited the total number of Lawyers to 10,000. this was in the 70’s, and their economy boomed. then they eliminated the law and it has been down hill ever since.

Yep.

Ernst, Clovis, and Whitaker are very good. So is Scott Schaben, but he’s got no traction. Jacobs is the only one who concerns me. Lots of money but very vague in his positions.

We need a constitutional amendment that bans all Lawyers from government. Maybe also restaurants, and public bathrooms!

The first thing we will do, is KILL ALL THE LAWYERS... William Shakespeare.

Over four hundred years, even though there were only a relative handful of the bloodsucken scum bags called lawyers, people recognized that the only cure for them and mooselimbs was total removal from the planet.

Plenty of time for the GOP candidate to come up with their own “political gaffe of the year”.

Hell we have that covered for a long time in the flatulence of Boner,Mitch the Turtle and McLame.

I live in the very SE corner, mom’s side has been here 6 generations, dad’s is from the south.

Very active in politics and campaigns and the GOP itself. The last 24 hours had been very enjoyable for our side.

The first problem here is someone from Iowa, running in an Iowa race campaigning in Texas. As a Texan it is not our place to be campaigned to we don’t vote there. Stop allowing fundraising outside of the state you are running in.

Actually, the Democrat get what they pay for - with our tax dollars. They have bought an electorate too stupid to vote them out...

How about a lawyer tax to fund the bloated legal system? Who else profits from it? They are very much the one percent.

yank the guy and get a retired senior Dem (possibly even Harkin) to step in to save the seat.

Isn't this Harkin's seat that they are running for? Do you think they would try to get Harkin to rescind his retirement and file to run again, if there is still time?

They had Disney reanimate Lautenberg, so why not drag Harkin back?

As to whether it’s too late, that rests in the hands of whatever Federal Judge they turn to.
