The 'political gaffe of the year' might just hand GOP the Iowa Senate seat

The only Democrat running in the primary for the open Senate seat in Iowa made a spectacular gaffe before a roomfull of trial lawyers in Texas.

Standing next to a table full of booze, Rep. Bruce Braley insulted farmers, praised lawyers, and belittled the second most popular political figure in Iowa.

Iowa Rep. Bruce Braley, a Democrat running for Senate, was caught on videotape disparaging fellow Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley as “a farmer from Iowa who never went to law school” — comments that later drew an apology from the candidate.

The video, posted online Tuesday afternoon by GOP opposition research firm America Rising, shows Braley speaking to what the group described as a group of lawyers at a fundraiser in Texas.

“If you help me win this race, you may have someone with your background, your experience, your voice — someone who’s been literally fighting tort reform for 30 years in a visible and public way on the Senate Judiciary” Committee, said Braley, a trial lawyer by training who is running to replace Iowa Democratic Sen. Tom Harkin. “Or you might have a farmer from Iowa who never went to law school, never practiced law, serving as the next chair of the Senate Judiciary. Because if Democrats lose the majority, Chuck Grassley will be the next chair of the Senate Judiciary.”

Braley is the sole Democratic candidate in a race that could, as he alludes to in the video, help determine which party controls the Senate after November. He faces whoever emerges from a crowded Republican primary field that includes state Sen. Joni Ernst, businessman Mark Jacobs and former U.S. Attorney Matt Whitaker.

Sigh, it's wishful thinking.

Our STUPID moronic FOOLISH voters keep voting for Democrat congresses and leaders. We get what we pay for.

Makes me GLAD that I am old, retired, healthy and financially established.

Look to the Dems to pull a Torricelli; yank the guy and get a retired senior Dem (possibly even Harkin) to step in to save the seat.

Same here,

We need a constitutional amendment that bans all Lawyers from government. Maybe also restaurants, and public bathrooms!

Plenty of time for the GOP candidate to come up with their own “political gaffe of the year”.

How about a Constitutional amendment limiting the number of lawyers.

I think 3 should be enough.

As Braley's idol might proclaim .... It's Officially Happy Hour with the Democratic Party!

Yeah ... and most of those who keep electing Democrat-Socialists live in the population centers -- the cities -- and have little in common with the state's farmers.

Has potential to offend lots of Iowans, but the Des Moines register has to print it, and it has to be used in ads.

congress is at least 2/3’s lawyers and look what they do to us.

i’d say the less lawyers in congress we’d all be better off and have better, more well-rounded representation.

I’ve never seen anything just explode here like Braley’s remarks. The Senate race was just ho-humming and chugging along all nice and low key. Now it’s just electrified. I think whoever can grab on and make the most hay will dramatically improve their position going toward primary day.

the people see a congress of 2/3 lawyers and believe the solution to the morass we get from them is less lawyers and more citizen statesmen.

lawyers see a congress of 2/3 lawyers and believe the problem is that congress isn’t made up entirely of lawyers.

The jackass was fundraising in Texas for his campaign in Iowa, and bragged up his 30 year opposition to *tort reform* (opposition to tort reform renders one unfit for office or any other position of responsibility), and THEN insults not only all farmers and others who rely on agriculture to earn their living, but most of the population of Iowa.

And on Sunday, the Demogogic Party’s Media Shills will use their shows to beat on Rumsfeld’s “trained monkey” line.

You’re in Iowa? Who do you think is the best candidate? Ernst? Clovis?
