A “Special Report” panel today discussed how G7 leaders met today in The Hague and announced that they would be excluding Russia from the G8 and boycotting a planned summit in Sochi.
Jason Riley, of the Wall Street Journal, said Russian President Vladimir Putin is rebuilding the Russian empire while President Barack Obama and our allies in Europe are sitting around discussing international law and “kicking Putin out of clubs he doesn’t care about in the first place.”
Riley said Putin knows that the administration doesn’t have the stomach for confrontation and will continue to take advantage of that.

Fournier, typically, has it ass-backwards. Putin’s the meat-eater and the G8 are the vegans - so its like excluding a meat-eater from a vegan only eat-n-puke.

For once I agree with the thinking of the G7 players.
Putin wants to be included in global economic policy making. Sorry Vlad, you had your chance and muffed it. At least you’ll be popular at home as your economy takes a hit.

Europe buys a majority of its oil from Russia. Russia is dependent on its oil revenue.
After Al Gore initially conceded the 2000 presidential race, I think it was Fournier that encouraged him to contest the election. Thanks to him, the climate of hate and bitterness hung over Bush during his entire eight years.

The EU, really NATO is not involved in a war. Nato was set up as a defensive alliance to stop Russia.
By watching Georgia and Ukraine, we see why. There will always be evil in the world. Russia, once again is claiming its mantle.
Understandable why they are doing this.... of course was only a ‘suspension’.....like the sanctions were for just 6 months. Putin will be back in the game but the stakes for all much higher after this event.
I doubt Putin is affected by this “snubbing”.......he knows the game and the players all to well. But IMO he has an advantage still...they all play musical chairs until the next elections, he simply adjusts his plans accordingly. He would have never attempted this move were a Reagan type at the helm.

I don’t disagree with your thoughts here. I particularly do agree with the comment about ‘a Reagan at the helm’.
First of all, our global stature would still be in tact. Our military would not be in the condition it seems to be in right now.
Reagan would have at the very least called for a summit between major players in the West, and would have left no illusions about what any further actions from Russia could very likely result in.
Putin toys with Obama like a cat would a mouse. Europe is adrift. I don’t see Putin going super crazy on us, but he is going to be adventuresome. Who’s to stop the guy now.
The West is in total disarray.
Reagan would have sat down with the Russians and told them “This is what we want, what is it that you want.” And together we would have worked through it. We have interests, they have interests, and they don’t necessarily have to conflict with one another.
IMO, the guys pulling the strings, if there are any, would more likely be folks you’ve never heard of.
People with that much power look down on a Soros as a rogue amateur.
They do not want to be known. Ramifications are impossible, if nobody knows you exist.

That’s not to say he doesn’t weigh undue influence on Obama and the Left, but they’re some of the most clueless bastards our nation has seen since it’s inception. They think they’re pulling the strings, they’re so full of carp.
I agree with the direction you’re headed there, and it wouldn’t have come to a situation like this, before Reagan would have headed it off.
Once again, the ineptitude of the Left rears it’s ugly head here. And frankly, the idiots on the Right haven’t been markedly better.
On one side you have the Left headed up by Obama and his vultures. On the Right you have McCain, Boehner, and various idiots taking turns embarrassing our nation. Think Libya, Egypt, and Syria...
Where’s the statesmen? Where are the folks who really know global dynamics? Hillary? Obama? McCain? Boehner? Lindsey Graham? We have a dearth of talent here.
I’ve said it a number of times here, you don’t leave the leaders of Russia to twist in the wind once the U. S. S. R. falls. You engage. You develop a working relationship. You build trust and mutual goals.
You head off alliances like that of China and Russia. You give the leadership of Russia a way to save face for their nation. You allow them to participate with the West so it can be seen as a player. You don’t have to give them real power, but you can allow Russia to have pride on the world stage. Right there I think you avoid situations like this.
Putin wants to be seen as a statesman. If we had created a role for him to play that in a way that didn’t give him teeth, we could have avoided this situation.
No, we didn’t have to conflict with one another. And yet, absent the close ties we could have had, guess what, that’s exactly what we’re turning to.
Reagan would have held substantive summets with Putin. He would have developed decent relations, and Putin and the Russians would have realized we’re all in the game together.
Instead we kind of ostracized Russia. We didn’t bring them along. Some of our leaders relished the diminished aspects of Russia. That was a big mistake. Now Vlad has something to prove to the West. “Not so fast jerks, we’re in this for keeps.”
It didn’t have to be this way.
Now what do we do, send Obama in on a tour de bowing?
One thing we better do, is rethink our military situation in terms of like yesterday, (or more like five years ago).
Our leaders better pull their heads out, or this planet is in for some very serious trouble.
Some of the gang here thinks you resolve all this by sticking your head in the sand and let Vlad do whatever he wants. When has that every worked with tyrants?
One way or another, if this escalates further, the planet will be involved. We either chose to stop it at it’s inception or we’ll face an amazingly more complex set of issues later one.
The first thing we do, is quietly stop financing our biggest threat, China. China must be put back in the bottle. I know folks will say that can’t be done, but if the West stops feeding it, China will be in a world of hurt in short order. It’s adventurism would stop.
This is hard-ball. We’re going to have to quit playing like it’s wiffle-ball.
