President Barack Obama had planned a week long trip to Europe and Saudi Arabia to highlight global progress in ridding the world of nuclear materials, soak up the positive publicity emanating from Pope Francis and reassure an anxious Gulf ally of the U.S. commitment to the region.
Instead, the trip will be dominated by Russia’s military seizure of Crimea and Obama’s efforts to persuade European allies to step up sanctions on Russia, even as critics at home suggest Obama hasn’t been as tough on Russian President Vladimir Putin as he needs to be.
Obama, who arrives in the Netherlands on Monday for a Nuclear Security Summit, has convened a meeting of the top seven industrialized countries to discuss how to punish Russia and support the Ukrainian government. He’ll also meet Monday with President Xi Jinping of China, who met with first lady Michelle Obama on her China trip.
He’ll hold a press conference at the close of the summit and meet with Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Zayed of the United Arab Emirates, to discuss U.S. efforts in Syria, nuclear negotiations with Iran and the prospect for Middle East peace talks.

Cutting our defense budget will not do it. Cozying up to the Muslims will not do it. Setting Iran up with the bomb will not do it. Your pen and phone will not do it. Your teleprompter will not do it. Doesn't jive talk tend to involve exaggerated threats? Obama's tactic here has been to appear completely non-threatening. The guy's no Samuel L Jackson in some hackneyed action movie - he's just another white liberal appealing to his opposite number's better angels, an American Neville Chamberlain.

Well it didn’t start with Obama.
Obama would be far better off if he were to attend his own national security council meetings. But that just doesn’t excite his interests plus it interferes with March Madness. Obama has his priorities. It should delight the neo isolationists though.
The Europeans are worried that the new, more muscular version of Vladimir Putin will cut off their natural gas supplies.
So unless Obama arrives with promises of help by easing restrictions on the export of U.S. natural gas, he’ll look even weaker and more irrelevant than ever.
When the Soviet Union blockaded Berlin, we responded with the Berlin Airlift, so how can we not promise more gas supplies now that Russia is threatening to shut off its pipelines to Europe?
Of course, Obama isn’t Harry Truman. Next week should be interesting.
The first act of the next President should be to send the official Obama portrait back to Kenya, Indonesia, or Pakistan where it belongs.
