Student Suspended for Taking Razor From Classmate (Who Was Self-Harming)
WAVY ^ | Thursday, March 20, 2014 | Andy Fox

We teach kids that honesty is the best policy, but at one Virginia Beach middle school it might be better to keep the truth to yourself.

Last Thursday at Bayside Middle School, sixth grader Adrionna Harris came to the aide of a classmate who was cutting his arm. She faces expulsion for taking a razor from the student, throwing it away and convincing him what he was doing wasn’t right. She thought she was doing the right thing, so on Friday she told the school administration what happened. The way school officials responded led to this question: was the school’s zero tolerance policy taken too far?

Instead of getting praise from the school administration, Adrionna got a 10 day suspension with recommendation for expulsion. The interesting thing — the only reason Adrionna got suspended was because she admitted what happened. The alleged weapon was thrown away, and it was her word alone that led to her suspension.

“I was shocked and surprised. I was very shocked that a student would get suspended for saving another child,” said Rachael Harris, Adrionna’s mother. “The school system over-reached absolutely.”

The school’s own details of the event state Adrionna reported the student had a razor blade. She admitted taking it from the student then throwing the blade away.

“I took the razor blade, and then I threw it away immediately … I didn’t carry it around the school … I didn’t use it against anyone … I threw it away,” she told 10 On Your Side.

“I felt she did the right thing,” said Rachael Harris. “Under the circumstances, she thought he would bleed out, as he was cutting himself, and there was no teacher in sight. It was a 911 situation, and there wasn’t time to find a teacher.”

We asked Adrionna, if she would do the same thing again, knowing she would get suspended for holding the blade.

“Even if I got in trouble, it didn’t matter because I was helping him … I would do it again even if I got suspended, yes,” she said.

Most frustrating to the Harris family is they feel like they were ignored — none of their calls were returned about the incident until 10 On Your Side got involved. WAVY.com made calls and went to the school. We called school board members, who didn’t want to comment, but calls finally came in to the Harris family.

“It is amazing. They are listening to us now … she should be back in school tomorrow and that would be fair,” said Rachael Harris.

Wednesday night, Virginia Beach City Public Schools agreed to do something that makes the Harris family really happy — they’ve moved Adrionna’s suspension hearing, which was supposed to be in ten days, to Thursday.

The Harris family hopes after the hearing, where everything is explained again, that Adrionna will be allowed back to class on Friday or at the latest Monday.

That is nuts. This school system needs sued out of existence. And all the administrators sent their pink slips, along with summons.

She should have kept the razor and gotten expelled, instead.

There was a case here a while back where one boy saw another student attack another in the bathroom, and was choking the kid. He broke this up and reported the incident, and got suspended for fighting. Nothing happened to the aggressor because he did not admit to anything.

Kids are being taught how the Transformed America will work.

Adrionna’s parents should be proud of their girl for performing a heroic act. Then, they should lawyer up to make sure the school district gives her full ride expenses to the college of her choice for being so stupid as to even consider suspension.

The school admin is just ticked off that they can’t schedule another 10 days of “seminars” on how to help children who are self-mutilating so they can pat themselves on the back for being sensitive.

Evan Sayett:
“The modern liberal, there’s something about his ideology that leads him to invariably and inevitably side with evil over good, wrong over right, the lesser over the better, the ugly over the beautiful, the profane over the profound, and the behaviors that lead to failure over those that lead to success.”

I love how they do all this media stuff about preventing bullying, but at the end of the ay they support it.

Whoever made the decision should be fired, and their boss. but they wont be.

“Government school is child abuse!”

That’s becoming more painfully apparent every day in this nation.

This is a suspension the girl should wear with pride. She did the correct thing. Take the punishment and keep doing what’s right. Begging for “forgiveness” from idiots would be a step in the wrong direction. JMHO

You sit and try to think of just the right comment to these types of instances. About all I can come up with, is that this is 180 degrees against my way of thinking.

The kid should get hazard pay for taking the dangerous device away. Instead they get kicked in the teeth.

These people and their incredible lack of judgement, disqualifies them from being in positions of authority, especially in places where children are involved, and good morals should be being taught to them.

This is gross negligence.

I guess I need to say this again. There is only one reason for “zero tolerance” policies.

INCOMPETENCE!

When a group of people that have responsibilities (real or implied) are in a position that could perceivable make decisions, they introduce liability. If there is concern that these “decision makers” are not competent, then they invite risk (litigation). The solution is to remove their responsibility to make decisions, thereby mitigating any liability. In this way, an institution can actually fire an employee (union contracts and all that) for violating the policy by “making a logical decision”.

It stands to reason, then, that our government teachers have been classified as incompetent to use good judgement and make good decisions by the very institution that employes them. But they are competent to regurgitate lessons from a book they follow.

And we wonder what is wrong with our public education system in America.

Virginia Beach City Public Schools.........?????

Guess this means in the DC area?????

The sheer mindlessness of this kind of BS depresses me almost to the point of giving up on the human species and moving permanently to the Alaskan Wilderness.

One wonders that given the sheer mindlessness of this incident if it is even true, or is this a joke or a prank or supernatural beings???

Some think humans are millennial descendants of chimpanzees! Are we seeing a reversion???

Believe me, the liberal that made this decision thinks it’s the right one.

The message here is to do nothing on your own initiative - ever. Report it to the “government” and wait for them to file a report after it is over. Never, ever, never act on your own or you will be punished by the drone collective.

I’m convinced the east coast (~D.C. and northward) has taken leave of its senses to a greater degree than the west coast. These no-common-sense stories always come from “there”.

So, you should abandon your religion, if the government tells you to.
