...viewers know MK Nobilette as the 20-year-old singer from San Francisco who has made history as “American Idol’s” first openly gay contestant, the young woman with a soulful voice and supercool style, and one of just 11 competitors still in the running as of earlier this week.

But at Or Shalom Jewish Community in San Francisco, she is better known as Michaela Spatt Nobilette, who made her public singing debut at her 2007 bat mitzvah.

I was at a Bat Mitzvah in New Hampshire last weekend where the celebrant and the cantor were a item. I don’t know if it is mainstream this little congregation has only 50 member families. The two ladies were overseeing a dying congregation.

How sad. It looks like she was been brought up in a lesbian home. No wonder she turned out gay.

It’s in the DNA.

Oooooh. That's going to get Adam Lambert's panties all wadded up.

First "openly gay" contestant?

Have they ever seen the show before?

How pathetic. American Idol’s ratings are going down the toilet so they resort to cheap stunts like this — playing up a contestant’s sexuality (there is no question in my mind that this article is part of an orchestrated campaign) — to gin up publicity.

American Idol’s ratings are going down but after 13 years it is bound to happen. There is not a show that maintained their great ratings throughout the time it was on. Ok before you yell at me and mention FRIENDS, you are right that it went out on top, but remember the cast decided enough, not the ratings.

I think I read Survivor is still doing well.

Clay Aiken's too.

She certainly isn't strong enough to be in the top ten. Were it not for the publicity stunt value she offers, she would have been gone weeks ago.

And the San Francisco lesbians I used to know when I lived there are all way less weird than her. :)

Lambert and Aiken didn’t admit to being gay while they were on the show, though. MK did.

So she has two mothers and just happens to become a lesbian herself?

Child abuse, pure child abuse.

As if they had to.

No, it was obvious they were gay, but my point is, MK came out and said it, even talking about her four moms.

She does have a good voice, but she is the unhappiest contestant I’ve ever seen.

It’s in the DNA.

She was adopted. It's more likely that she was brought up to hate men and not trust them.

I think in rare cases it’s the DNA, but in the vast majority of cases it is a choice that is molded based on the person’s experiences (especially in the cases of the person being molested).
