LOL: the longer we do nothing, the greater the chance a small or middle weight power will make a move misjudging the situation that actually provokes WWIII.

Nothing promotes stability like a projection of non-aggressive strength-- right now we are projecting complete impotence.

Some members of the Senate and House need quietly to approach Obozo and inform him he needs to replace John "Swimming to Cambodia" Kerry and Chucky "Never saw a defense cut I didn't like" Hagel immediately with some competent secretaries who will run US defense and foreign policy until Bambi leaves office.

LOL— perfect representation of the dim bulbs in DC.

Sometimes I really wish we had the British form of government where we could force a “No Confidence” vote.

Is Turkey relying on NATO to get them out of this situation?

International law died with the election of Obama...

They’ve already done that in Syria using their proxy Hezbollah and are now trying to arm Hamas to the teeth.

The same thing was said during Watergate before Nixon resigned.

Anyway, Harry Reid wouldn't let it come to a vote in the Senate, even if we had that in The Constitution.

“Because they have long standing ties to the Crimean Tartars and are also directly threatened by Russia’s aggressiveness in the Black Sea and Caucasus.”

So, we’re bound by treaty to defend Turkey if they’re attacked, does that mean if they provoke the attack? Because if the mess with Putin’s efforts to rebuild the Russian empire they’re going to get their &ss handed to them. Frankly, I don’t want to defend a Muslim nation that sided against us in the Iraq war. It was only Bush’s bluff that kept Saddam from moving his northern army to Kuwait.

Turkey threatens Russia

Like a chihuahua snarling and snapping at a rottweiler and then retreating behind it's master.

If Turkey attacks Russia, then I’ll see you next year in Constantinople.

Crimean Tartars make really good sauce.

The Crimean Tatars made use of their strategic position between the Ottomans and the Russians. They supplied slaves for the Ottoman Janissary corps from the neighboring peoples; so many, in fact, that even the English word “slave” derives from the ethnic signifier “Slav.”

As someone noted, the Bosporus is Turkey's sovereign territory: they can do with it what they like, so it can't be considered a "provocation."

And we are still bound by our NATO obligations if Turkey is attacked.

We are just beginning to reap the fruits of having a "community activist" foisted upon us as President by a lapdog media.

Wonderful. Who's the numbskull that thought admitting Turkey to NATO was a good idea?

LOL-- you got me on that one.

The Slav/slave connection has now fallen into disrepute, since the term is attested in Byzantine Greek, and probably comes from the Greek word for "spoils" (of war).

We have a winner: now would be a good time to clean Assad’s clock and get the Russian fleet out of the Med also.

Oh, but I assumed someone in the insane clown posse running DC has a strategic thought in their heads.

I’ll go you one further; have Turkey close the Bosphorous to Russian warships (but not commercial ships), then clean Assad’s clock, as you put it, thereby depriving Russia of that port in the Med, and then sic Israel on Iran’s nuclear installations.

BOOM. One, Two, Three. Putin’s allies rendered impotent, loss of the Russian Navy’s Med port, Iran’s nuclear ambitions hit hard and the Black Sea Fleet bottled up in, well, the Black Sea.

Granted, this would require some actual leadership in DC, but it’s nice to dream, isn’t it? And if you’re gonna dream, dream big. I dream of that pipeline running from the ME to Europe, supplying natural gas to the EU (along with shale gas extraction in Poland) and blowing a nice big hole in Russia’s economy.

Greece and Turkey were added as members at the same time (of course) in October 1951 after the Greek civil war. Truman was President.

Looks like that could be a reason for Russia to go and kick some Turkish butt—maybe demand Hagia Sophia be turned into an Orthodox Church again. This is all hot air—I wonder how much Obama paid for this show of force from Turkey. Worry not all of this will blow over in a year—unless something really bad happens in Ukraine.

We could throw in export subsidies for US-made fracking equipment as well.

Do you suppose the geniuses governing us might consider scaling back the plan to halve Army's size now?

In a way we're lucky Yanukovich's incompetence forced Putins hand now before Barack "the Marxist Muslim" Obama could destroy the military completely.

Next year in Constantinople.

A phrase coined and oft-used by a friend of mine here on FR.
