As Krauthammer puts it, “if he thinks that sanctioning seven Russians, out of a population of, what, 150 million, is a sanction, he’s living in a different world.” I don’t know about Dr. K’s suggestion that we could get the Europeans to join in on real, robust economic sanctions, given their degree of energy dependence on Russia, but today’s announcement definitely amounts to little more than weaksauce symbolic gesture:

Again, if you’re going to do something, do it. Otherwise, say nothing, but this really is a humiliating response by a president who can’t even get the Europeans to join him in effective sanctions, which we could do.

Russia’s interests are strategic not economic. Russia is reasserting itself as a great power with the capability to promote and defend its interests in the post-Soviet space. And sanctioning seven Kremlin officials is like trying to hit the Bear with a toothpick. They’re dying of laughter in Moscow because it reveals America has no real power to defend its friends and to punish its enemies.
Russia has it and will continue to bulldoze ahead and show Europe just how little America can do to keep them safe. Which is precisely the point. After Russia digests Crimea as an appetizer, eastern Ukraine may be the main course.
I wish Putin had banned Zero, Biden, and The Pantsuit Herself, from ever attending the Moscow Ballet, ever again.
The “sanctions” are all window dressing for domestic US consumption. The dim bulbs in the White Hut are ok with Putin taking Crimea.
Fascists think in terms of Crony Capitalism.
Crony Capitalism equates the economics of those in power with the economics of the entire State.
Of course Obama thinks putting economic sanctions on individuals is the same as putting sanctions on the State.
He's not even bright enough to realize that outside of Chicago the skim doesn't always come off of the top. Sometimes a bit is taken out here and there downstream where the Cronies aren't so obviously involved as they are in Chicago and other Fascist Duchies.
