McCain Blasts Obama For 'Timid' Response to Russia
NBC News ^ | March 17th 2014 | Carrie Dann

Sen. John McCain blasted the "timidity" of the Obama administration’s sanctions on Russian officials Monday, saying that the White House needs a "fundamental reassessment" of the relationship between the United States and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"This president’s response – I don’t know how it could have been weaker, besides doing nothing," McCain said during an appearance on MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell Reports.

The Arizona Republican said that Putin is likely "encouraged by the absolute timidity" of the U.S. reaction to Russia's incursion into Crimea.

"I don’t know when the president and his advisers are going to wake up to what Putin is really all about," he added. "We've got to start with a fundamental reassessment of our relationship with him."

McCain, who just returned from a trip to Ukraine with seven other lawmakers, recommended that the United States instead provide Ukrainian forces with defensive weapons and training.

"One of the things that I would do is send some of our military to Kiev and find out how we can best assist them," he said.

McCain should resign and check himself into a clinic. Good for him and the rest of the world.

The problem is McCain is as detached from reality as his Ukrainian hosts.

Russia is a superpower. Its not an errant child. And why he is surprised it does what a superpower can do?

And Russia’s interests will always differ from America’s. Our influence with Moscow is exceedingly limited.

McCain and Obama, both are wrong to the other extreme. One does nothing, the other wants to start WW III.

Which is which?

You said...
“It can be done without starting World War III. Read up on how Ronald Reagan bankrupted the Soviet Union to help win the Cold War. He did it through energy policy.”

But could we do the same today? We didn't have a 17 trillion dollar debt load in the 1980’s

Wonder how this would play out under President Romney?

It probably wouldn't even happen under a Romney presidency.

Russia would just wait until another dem got elected.

“Wonder how this would play out under President Romney?”

With Romney, Keystone would have already been built. He would have offered Europe cheap energy which would have made the Russians think differently.

Then he would have issued sanctions for Russia condemning gay sex.

Sorry, McVain. I’m not interested on siccing our hollowed-out military on Russia over a piece of Russian land which was given to Ukraine as a political favor by a Communist Party boss a mere 60 years ago.

Russia is a superpower.

LOL. Russia is a one trick pony kleptocracy one financial crisis from ruin. Putin is adventuring to distract the Russian people lest they notice the decay in their country.

Sometimes?

He should go himself. Bring a weapon and tell everyone what to do. Would the Arizonans who constantly foist this nutcase on us figure put then that a few flights before getting shot down and then six years in jail does no necessarily make one a military leader

Where are all of his jail mates telling of his great leadership? He got hurt. Ok they all did. Some of them did quite well, but e cause they were leaders before, during and after, not because they were in jail

He is an idiot and he feels his power slipping away. No one in this country wants anyone to go to war. we are done for now. He doesn’t realize that. He’s an idiot

Good question. Everything that's happening now was put on course by decisions made 3-5 years ago.

video, U.S. Senators Make A Spectacle Of Themselves In Ukraine

In a press conference in Kiev, McCain , seven other senators, John Barasso (R-Wyo.), Richard J. Durbin (D-Ill.), Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), John Hoeven (R-N.D.), Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), Christopher Murphy (D-Conn.) and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), said Congress stood with the people of Ukraine. They called for strict sanctions against Russia. However, McCain went further than his colleagues.

"Ukraine is going to need a long-term military assistance program from the U.S. -- equipment both lethal and nonlethal," said McCain

We used to draw lines about how far we would allow the Soviet Union to go without risking WWIII. Our policy of containment took down the Soviet Union and kept hundreds of millions free in Europe.

What should we do if China decides to invade Taiwan? Risk WWIII?

+1.

If America had become a significant exporter of LNG a few years ago, Gazprom (also known as “Russia”) would be far less pathological today.

I cordially loathe McCain as much as the next FReeper, but Palin would have drilled, baby, drilled - and granted LNG export licenses.

When the world is full of pathological extraction economies, a strong Energy policy IS strong Foreign policy.

Russia is not a superpower. It has a huge nuclear capability, but economically it is far from being a superpower. Its GDP is 8th in the world just behind Brazil and ahead of Italy. It has a fertility rate of 1.61% and the life expectancy for males is 64.7%. Average life expectancy is 70.16 years making in 151st in the world.

We could say the same about McCain’s response (circa 2008) to the threat of an Obama presidency.
