ROCKVILLE, MD — Thousands of motorists were brought to a standstill when police conducted a massive roadblock to find three crime suspects. Twelve lanes of traffic were shut down and swarms of armed government agents combed through a giant traffic jam performing warrantless vehicle-to-vehicle searches.
The busy Tuesday morning commute was abruptly halted just after 10:00 a.m. on March 11th. One driver told ABC News that traffic stopped and he witnessed 30 police cars pass on the shoulders of I-270 near Rockville. “Then, when I saw a wall of police officers with automatic weapons approaching our cars, it was apparent that something serious was taking place.”
Police had received intelligence that a local bank had been robbed that morning and the vehicle carrying the 3 suspects had turned onto the interstate highway. A throng of officers from the Rockville, Montgomery County, and Maryland State Police Departments blockaded all lanes of traffic in both directions and began conducting an intense manhunt.
There was “a lot of yelling, a lot of orders being given, helicopters, dogs barking, sirens, police cars driving by,” said eyewitness Carlton Higdon to WJLA.
Miles of cars were stranded and motorists were confined to their vehicles, with no explanation, for over an hour. Confused people exiting their vehicles were met with hostility from the police. WTOP reported that one woman leaned out her door to vomit, she was shouted at by cops to close her door.
“It’s just awful,” motorist Carmel Desroche to WJLA, describing the traffic jam. “I’ve never seen both directions of 270 like this before. It was painful.”

What you have is a massive failure by law enforcement in Maryland. They panic at their failure and violate the Constitution wantonly to cover up their incompetence. They should be rounded up and sent to prison for breach of civil rights.

Something tells me that there probably was no bank robbery.
I want to know more about the guys they were after before I pass judgment. In 1978 my sister and I were in a roadblock on I-10 for four hours while LEO did the same thing. We had no idea what was going on and it was scary- but we later found out LEO was searching for Gary Tison, Randy Greenawalt and others that were on a murdering crime spree after breaking out of prison in Arizona. As inconvenienced and upset as we all were about the roadblock and the way LEO was acting it was far better than being a hostage of a murderer and not being saved.
Great advice. Unfortunately the people of Maryland along with many others through-out the country place into power those political elites who allow and encourage such police/law enforcement actions. In essence the public has given their consent to be ‘violated’ via the ballot box. Until the MAJORITY of the voting public actually gives a damn about Constitutional rights nothing is going to change. It will only get worse as such ‘violations’ will increasingly become the norm. Those who resist will either be given the obligatory sympathy from the usual quarters then fade away or something worse with little sympathy from an uncaring, uninterested public.
This is what happens when cops don’t have anything to do. Build them some basketball courts, or give them arts and crafts seminars, so they can learn something useful. Take their guns away, and make them dress funny, anything to discourage them from becoming a standing military force to use against the people. Better yet, if there are enough cops for them to block traffic like that, there are too many. Fire a bunch of them.

The problem, is that the people familiar with those subjects aren’t the people who need to be - and many of the people who aren’t familiar with them will need re-education.
I’ve always wondered about the rather broad and elastic definition of “exigent circumstances”...
