Rather than apologize, that should have been Ryan's explanation if he thought he had to give one.
Remember, Ryan is a PC, pro-multicultural open borders Republican who who would no doubt consider most freepers “racist” for opposing amnesty.
Ironically, is was his desire to talk about black issues in a forlorn hope of getting black votes that caused him to say this.
That’s the irony of the corporate, country club, pro-diversities Republicans. They are so out of touch and clueless that they come off of patronizing and condescending whenever they talk about racial issues. Even when not making a gaffe, they are the sort of Republicans that blacks would be least likely to vote for for class reasons.

Paul Ryan’s actions demean us all by implying through his groveling actions that we are all racists.
Reagan was never harsh and vituperative, which was how he got elected Governor of California (very leftwing even in those days), thus setting him on the road to the WH.
Yes, but Reagan could say this because his whole approach was personal and accessible. Welfare had become a great burden by then and everybody knew it. (And while welfare is still a great burden, at least the reaction that he channeled did clean up a lot of the more obvious fraud...well, until now.)
So we need somebody who can call a spade a spade, but do so in a way that appeals to people. Most people don’t want to get welfare, they want to work and have a decent life. And that was the other thing Reagan pitched, at a time when (post-Jimmy) we were in the pits.

No of course not but I’d rather not have 8 yrs of President Ryan, either. Maybe by Romney losing, we can elect a conservative Republican as President in 2016, and in the long run, we can get the country straightened out better than 16 yrs. of Romney/Ryan.
The truth is offensive.
Reagan was savagely attacked and told his "Welfare Queen" story was a racist lie. [Even though it does not say anything about the race of the perpetrator at all.]
Welfare had become a great burden by then and everybody knew it.
I guess you did not live through those times; I did. "Everybody" did not know any such thing. There was still a very large constituency for handouts, even if it wasn't the [low estimate] 47% it is today. And the handouts have increased in size through every administration, including Reagan's.

The first thing you do is NOT APOLOGIZE. When you apologize, you are accepting responsibility and asking for forgiveness from blame. Ryan's first and most serious mistake was in not simply saying: "What I've said is true. There is nothing for me to apologize for."

I do not believe this is true any longer. I think people want a decent life, but I'm not sure a majority wants to work for that. We need to change peoples' minds. You can't do that by "admitting" you were wrong as soon as you meet any resistance.
We are in a death spiral. There is no way out of that except by radically changing direction, and you can't change direction if you continue to allow the adversary to set the rules of debate. Paul Ryan's apology once again leads people to believe that he was a) wrong b) insensitive and c) by association all Republicans are insensitive and wrong. This HAS to stop.

If the quote is accurate, their inference that by "men" you meant African-American parasites, they are the racists, that always manage to knee-jerk towards the truth.
Apologizing or explaining anything validates their crippled intellect.
He shouldn’t have to apologize...because he should have said it right the first time.
Reagan could do this, but Ryan and many of our stalwart conservatives, including Cruz (who can only preach to the choir) cannot get the message out in any way that connects with people.
That’s what we’ve got to change. So who is he or she, this person who actually knows how to communicate?
I can’t think of anybody on the conservative side.
Don’t have much use for Ryan, but he should challenge them to prove him wrong, not kiss their butts. What he said was factual and correct - don’t apologize for it.
Is “highly offensive” the new term for ‘telling the truth”?
The more Ryan dances for coins for Al Sharpton and Co., the less authority he has for his amnesty-betrayal schemes against our homeland.
There was nothing wrong with what he said the first time.
