This is starting to sound more and more like a terrorist attack. I suppose it could have been a sudden catastrophic mechanical failure or explosion. Who knows?

It is not a "terrorist attack" unless someone takes "credit" for it. At this point nobody is bragging about their victory against the infidels, so I suspect that it was not a successful terrorist plot.
Perhaps it was a "center fuel tank" explosion?
