UPDATE [12:37]: Tuoi Tre, a leading daily in Vietnam, reports that the Vietnamese Navy has confirmed the plane crashed into the ocean. According to Navy Admiral Ngo Van Phat, Commander of the Region 5, military radar recorded that the plane crashed into the sea at a location 153 miles South of Phu Quoc island.
When contacted, Malaysia Airlines declined to confirm or deny the reports, saying that the Malaysian authorities are working together with the Vietnamese government on the matter.
Meanwhile, Al Jazeera reports that China has dispatched two maritime rescue ships to help locate the missing plane.

The plane was at high cruise altitude, over the sea.
Most likely is mechanical/structural failure, second would be an on-board bomb.

I’ve checked three different ship trackers. No major surface units of any kind within 100’s of miles.
Depth of Gulf of Thailand is stated to be 45-80 meters, maybe more as you get closer to the South China Sea. Can’t find a decent depth chart, will keep looking.

Wild speculation and conspiracy theories often dominate threads here.
We still have several FReepers who think MANPADS and low-altitude anti-aircraft missiles can shoot down airliners at cruising altitude. Not likely.
I also read one person who suggested Obama was somehow responsible because he wanted a diversion from the Ukrainian crisis.
The UFO theory is exciting. I can imagine sitting in your parent’s basement listening to coast to coast AM sharing your wisdom with the world.....

Just watch and observe. I bet someone will connect this to the mysterious contrail off the west coast, Michelle Obama’s new hair color, Ron Brown and Arkancide, the shortage of .22 ammo, and a host of unrelated incidents.
Prayers for those suffering such a loss and hopefully we will learn what happened, but if the truth does not match the conspiracy theory they will deny it. You know, it’s all part of the conspiracy.
hardly... just about the entire 200 or so posts on the first thread regarding this incident was speculation... in fact someone there suggested we try to get to 1,000 posts about that which we know nothing about at that time :)

Doesn’t look very deep there. Recovery of the black boxes shouldn’t be too difficult.
According to navy Adm. Ngo Van Phat, a regional commander, military radar recorded that the plane crashed into the sea south of Phu Quoc island. The People's Daily, Chinese Communist Party's official newspaper, reported the same information.
It says their radar confirms it fell into the sea. So, they must know where it fell in.
Looks like it crashed near where FlightRadar24 lost data.
Roughly 150 miles south of Tho Chu island.

Assuming authorities are correct(the last signal being located 120 nautical miles (140 miles; 225 kilometers) southwest of Vietnam’s southernmost Ca Mau province)that’s only about 300nm from departure...early reports said contact was lost “2 hours” into the flight. Something there doesn’t jive.
One story I read stated the reporting of contact lost 2 hours after departure was wrong and that contact was actually lost 40 minutes after departure.
I’m speculating that the 2 hour number MAY have been an official number. In that ATC may have continued to try to raise a signal for 2 hours(1+ hours after contact lost), even though return contact from the plane may have ceased after 40 minutes.
It’s hard to say at this point. Depending on the actual coordinates of the wreckage, it could be anywhere from 300 to 500 miles from departure. The local officials giving updates seem to use ‘south, southwest, northeast’ loosely.
