Skip to comments.McCain: Here’s How to Punish Putin
Posted on 03/01/2014 10:03:52 PM PST by kingattax
President Obama promised Friday there would be costs if Russia moved troops into Ukraine, but he didnt specify what those costs might be. Sen. John McCain has several suggestions for Obama, including the sanctioning of high-level Russian officials; restarting missile defense plans in Eastern Europe; and bringing Georgia, a former Soviet republic, into NATO. McCain said he plans to push from the Congressional side, he told The Daily Beast in an exclusive interview Saturday evening.
McCain wants the administration to expand its threat to pull out of the G8 Summit in Sochi scheduled for June. That limited move is unlikely to convince Putin to give up his control of Crimea, where Russia has its 15,000-man strong Black Sea Fleet and where unmarked but Russian-controlled paramilitary troops not control the two main airports.
I think Obamas threat is laughable, McCain said. But I think we ought to do it and every other international gathering of leaders, because the one thing that Putin enjoys is strutting on the international stage.

Perhaps it would be wise if all elected officials were forced to retire at age 75.
Anything in the Bible about Judas Iscariot being a “maverick” or anything like that??
It’s ok John, those nice young men in their clean white coats are coming for you now.
Though McCain might be getting old, he’s not bad when it comes to diplomacy.
Anything in the Bible about Judas Iscariot being a maverick or anything like that??
Did he have a fat, loud-mouthed, bloviating, vapid daughter......who is a “cam whore”?
> “...a chunky, vacuous daughter”
I normally refer to her as Meghan McMoron but I like your description better.
Even worse, mcClown thinks Congress will solve this.... Because they are so effective at solving every other problem.
He’s insane. And oh yeah, he wants to arm Al Qaeda because they’re not all bad guys.
McCain is irrelevant. Washed out dud. Only good to slam conservatives.
Between McCain and Dumbo, I’d bet Putin is shaking in his boots.....not really.
Here's how George Bush stopped Putin in Georgia:
He started out by talking to him face to face in Beijing and letting him know, man to man, that it was not going to go as Putin imagined.
We had military advisors already on the ground there. Bush immediately expedited the return of 2,000 members of Georgia's 31st Light Infantry Battalion who had been fighting beside US Marines in Afghanistan.
He then sent in more US personnel and material on C-130s and C-17s...direct to Tiblisi and immediately (which is what we should be doing right now to Kiev). When those US C-17s and C-130s went in, they had a lot of US personnel on them in addition to the supplies and material...and that was in addition to the military personnel we already had there.
Bush did not pull those out...he added more to it and made it clear to Putin that a push into and through Tiblisi was going to put the US Military in the line of fire and that Putin DID NOT WANT TO DO THAT.
In addition, in short order, three US warships and three NATO warships entered the Black Sea. Some brought supplies, others stood by and defended them. The three NATO warships and one of the US warships were top of the line surface combatants with two AEGIS vessels and two other guided-missile vessels.
Putin knew that Bush meant what he said. He had seen it already time and again over the seven years prior. He consiodered the cost of rolling over those US personnel and what the consequences would be, and he knew there would be very severe consequences with a heavy interest payment.
The following are all pictures from the events of the day, during the Georgian crisis, of us material, more advisors, equipment flowing in. Of US advisors already on the ground and training Georgian forces immediately prior to and during the crisis, and US and NATO warships all sent into the Black Sea during the crisis.
Bush drew a stark line in the sand...and he did it with the US military even as the Russian forces were nearing the capitol...and Putin paused, and then stopped, and negotiated.
Now THAT'S how you deter a man like Putin. Stop talking and start acting.
“You have nothing to worry about with an obama presidency” - John McCain.
How’s that crow taste, Juan?
You say McCain “is not bad when it comes to diplomacy”
You mean, the way he pals around with Syrian terrorists?
Some great pix.
However, that must be a ‘photo shop’ of W as we all know that W stood for ‘WIMP’ and he was nothing but a Cowboy that everyone laughed at. (Don’t take MY word for it, I saw it all over TV, newspapers, and didn’t BO run against the ‘wussy boy’?) In fact W was so bad he is still being blamed for BO’s shortcomings.
Going down the pix that picture of the Marine ‘3Star’ is classic.
That is what a GENERAL should like like...Not those perfumed princes with every hair in place and an arse kissing smile.
True. But I still think he has a point here. I doubt Obama can pull it off tho.
Having a vague, distant feeling of when our country was led by people that at least gave the appearance of knowing how to handle things in the big leagues. It all seems so quaint now...
Term limits is still the better solution.
Why is this any of our business at all? Crimea is Russian. Period. Split Ukraine East & West. It is the only way.
Just to clarify - “George Bush stopped Putin in Georgia” - is it most common version of 2008 august events in US?
Simply to clarify, nothing more.
Sarah Palin predicted this back in 2008 and the media laughed at her and called her stupid.
Looks like she was right again and Obama was asleep at the switch again.
Yet the media can’t bring themselves to say that she was right and Obama is incompetent.
I'm no big W fan, but he would say what he meant, speak his intentions clearly, then do those things.
I guess your own comments (such as that italicized above) were about how he was otherwise portrayed in the media?
And Pussy Riot. Don’t forget Pussy Riot.
These issues should have been settled in 1994. But then you had the same numbskulls that gave us The Dayton Accords who created this mess. Just took a little longer for it to blow up like Yugoslavia.
It says PUNISH not INHUMANE TORTURE
I have a better idea Senator - let’s force Putin to listen to you prattle on 24/7!
That just might work. 'DEAR GOD I'LL DO ANYTHING...JUST MAKE IT STOP!!!"
McCain worked with defense contractors as a liaison officer to the Senate in the late 1970’s.
I figure he still works with them trying to get this country mixed up in places around the world so the contractors can get some business.
It was annexed to Ukraine as some kind of gesture.
The Ukraine has been independent for 25 years and have done nothing more than dug themselves into a hole.
The EU and the USA as instigators doesn't help.
May God protect all sides.
As far as the USA....we are not involved in this. They haven't attacked us and the Ukraine is trying to sucker us into getting involved.
My God, McLame found another TV camera...run!
In 2004 Tyahnybok was expelled from the Our Ukraine parliamentary group for a speech calling for Ukrainians to fight against a "Muscovite-Jewish mafia." His advisor Yuriy Mykhalchyshyn established a "Joseph Goebbels Political Research Centre" un 2005. Mykhalchyshyn referred to the Holocaust as a "period of Light in history". Andreas Umland, a political scientist at the National University of Kiev Academy, wrote: "Svoboda is a racist party promoting explicitly ethnocentric and anti-Semitic ideas. Inside, Svoboda is much more radical and xenophobic than what we see.
After the 2010 conviction of the Nazi death camp guard John Demjanjuk for his supporting role in the death of nearly 30,000 people at the Sobibor camp, Tyahnybok rushed to Germany to declare him a hero who was fighting for truth.
Svobodas openly pro-Nazi politics have not deterred Senator John McCain from addressing a EuroMaidan rally alongside Tyahnybok, nor did it prevent Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland from enjoying a friendly meeting with the Svoboda leader.
On Maidan Square 30% of the protesters were nationalists and neo-nazis, who mostly came to Kiev from Lvov and the West Ukraine. They destroyed a memorial to Ukrainians who died battling German occupation during World War II. Sieg heil salutes and the Nazi Wolfsangel symbol became a common sight in Maidan Square.
“McCain is irrelevant. Washed out dud. Only good to slam conservatives.”
Here’s how we punish mclame.................nursing home!
McCain should probably be in a nursing home.
He's a shoe-in when bashing Conservatives and The T.E.A. Party.
Will those shows acknowledge Palin & Romney were right on Russian foreign policy while Obama looks like a fool.
We are doomed....Ukraine us DOOMED....all because we have Obama for President!
Obama has BLOOD on his hands.....so do the STUPID VOTERS that voted this Communist in.
W also had Dick Cheney’s stiff spine and strong brain, unlike Slow Joe Bite Me’s GIRLIE little brain and no spine.
Why would threatening to pull out of the G8 conference be a threat?
Any SERIOUS answers or discussion?
Not bad! Same thing he always screams “ We must send troops some one needs to die and die now” He should be called the brown bomber as he has his head so fare up his ass. The man needs to be in a home for the unstable.
I guess your own comments
= = = = = = = = = = ==
I am sorry, I was being very facetious and sardonic....I, (when I think MY intention is obviously obvious) sometimes neglect the ‘sarcasm’ tag....
