Weekly Jobless Claims Unexpectedly Rise to 348K

The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits unexpectedly rose last week, but the underlying trend suggested no shift in labor market conditions.

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits increased 14,000 to a seasonally adjusted 348,000, the Labor Department said on Thursday. Claims for the prior week were revised to show 2,000 fewer applications received than previously reported.

Economists polled by Reuters had forecast first-time applications for jobless benefits slipping to 335,000 in the week ended February 22, which included the Presidents Day holiday.

While last week's increase pushed them to the upper end of their range so far this year, it probably does not signal labor market weakness as claims tend to be volatile around federal holidays.

The four-week moving average for new claims, considered a better measure of underlying labor market conditions as it irons out week-to-week volatility, was unchanged at 338,250.

It's fun with Thursday job numbers once again.

NOTE: The word unexpectedly is in the title, as if to pre-empt those wishing to use the word.

I like the new twist of the numbers not being significant since a federal holiday was in the general vicinity. Should get a lot of mileage out of that since federal holidays come every 3 or 4 weeks... We get the government we deserve..

I hope they did not let them go due to O care as they have to so certify!

BTW, note how in the Judge’s order in Texas yesterday there was a comment about defining marriage as between a man and woman having no legitimate basis. That was enough to deep six the texas law but it does not hold for the regulation from his excellency about the need for a certification about why people laid off.

Just in case you are concerned in year 6 of Obamanomics. Rooters wants to assure you all is well.

"...but the underlying trend suggested no shift in labor market conditions"

"it probably does not signal labor market weakness as claims tend to be volatile around federal holidays"

"The four-week moving average for new claims, considered a better measure of underlying labor market conditions as it irons out week-to-week volatility, was unchanged"

"An unusually cold winter has clouded the labor market picture"

"The so-called continuing claims have been elevated in recent weeks and some economists say the cold weather could be preventing many recipients from going out to search for work and companies to delay hiring."

Also. Just a heads up. It snowed in February (because snow in February rarely happens). This will produce another weak jobs report...

"A third month of weak hiring is expected after snowstorms slammed the densely populated regions of the country during the survey week for February nonfarm payrolls."

So the stupid judge called the Bible less than 'legitimate"?

I guess they are getting sworn in on a copy of, what exactly, an old Sears catalogue?

With so many word on my libspeak bingo sheet I’ve been drunk all day everyday since 2008.

BUT I will spin this like a good liberal. The economy is soooo good that record numbers of people are rushing in to the job market so it only appears to be worse. The economy is soooo good the only reason workforce participation is so low is people have so much money they can retire in luxury. All that or it was the snow. Or it was the drougt. Or it was a solar flare. Or it was a short month. Or.........
