In Duty: Memoirs of a Secretary at War, © 2014, Gates details how he pushed for time to repeal "DADT", time to survey the troops and their families, time to get an idea of how the repeal would affect the military during a period when 2 wars were being fought. Once lifted, the transition was smooth, he writes, much of which he attributed to the preparation he and others insisted upon.
Now he will bring the BSA through a similar time of transition.
"I think they took an important step forward saying that gay youths can be in Scouts," he says. "And I strongly support that. I think now, certainly for the period that I am president, I think that there is a focus on trying to heal the organization, heal the divisions that were caused by the debate and refocusing on the program itself." ...
Gates is stepping in at a time when many advocacy groups are calling for the BSA to also allow openly gay adult leaders.
"The beauty of CIA and the military is at the end of the day, when the law has changed or the policy changed, you can just tell people," he says. "(BSA is) a volunteer organization, the volunteers had a big debate and they had a huge vote and the vote was pretty strong in favor of letting gay youths be in scouting, but it's clear that there's still a lot of reluctance to take the next step. There sure is a lot about homosexuality in the news isn’t there? Here this story focuses on homosexual issues in Gates old jobs and his new job. As if there are no other important issues in his career.
Yeah, the "vote" was in favor because the Councils and National stacked the deck...no surprise there.
The poll results were almost the direct opposite of the vote results...60+% of those surveyed opposed the change, yet, that somehow becomes 60+% voting for the change.
Yep, makes sense to me.
As a result of those shenanigans by the BSA to essentially "force" the change, they have compromised their ethics, morals, character and leadership...they are unfit, IMO.
Oh, and btw Mr. Gates, spare me the "healing" nonsense...I'm out and won't be coming back. The BSA told me and folks like me who won't bow to political correctness, that we aren't "welcome" any longer. Conform or else.

I feel sorry for any little 8 yro boy who may be outcast at school, not athletic, not popular, and who scouting can really be a God send...
but an 8 yro doesn't know anything about being a gay...ADULTS put that notion in his head....
sure...you'll find gay adults who will say "I knew I was different" or "I knew I was gay" when they were young, but that is a completely subjective looking back observation....any kid will have fleeting thoughts...any kid....

I would never put my young son in a situation where he would be oogled by other scouts....I would object loudly if my son wanted to join the military, knowing that he will stand naked, shower with, toliet with, sleep in the same room with guys who may be predators on him.....luckily, my son is way beyond those yrs....now to worry about my grandson...

I have been den leader, asst cubmaster. Asst scoutmaster. Scoutmaster and present at almost every district wide or council event. I founded a very successful troop and helped brought in five figure popcorn sales every year. My sons are Eagle and Life.
Trail life is a far better program albeit in its infancy. They hold to the values I adhere to.

I would probably like to help on an as needed basis...the wife is looking forward to some time with me, so I would need to be careful as to how involved I get. ;^)
Plus I’d probably viewed a bit suspiciously. “Why’s this guy with no son in the program here?” kind of thing. ;^)
I’d find a local troop and see if they could use your experience. Doesn’t necessarily need to be as a key leader.
