On Monday, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel announced massive cuts to the size of the armed services, slashing the army to its pre-World War II size. In 2011, the army had some 566,000 soldiers; Hagel wants it cut to somewhere between 440,000 and 450,000 troops by 2019. If Congress does not add additional funding, Hagel threatens to slash that number to 420,000 by 2019.

Don’t get me wrong, Obama wants a weaker USA, but this proposal also a diversion. No way this gets through congress Democrat or Republicans. Even weak kneed RATS love defense spending in their district. This is clearly a diversion from Obama to take attention away from the ObamaCare disaster.

In the short term, maybe this will produce a lot of nothing. Part of the world’s hate for the USA was envy that it was so successful and forceful. Look at Putin now. He pities the USA more than hates it.
In the long term, it will catch the USA with its pants down when it needs to fight. Drones can’t do everything.
The thing is, I see a lot of support on this board for sending jobs to China.

China is now a larger importer than America.
We need to bring back American jobs. All American jobs. We need to stop spending American assets on imports.
When we stop spending American assets on imports, then our defense budget will also stop shrinking.

I knew this would happen from the start. I have yet to hear about one single social program that's been cut. Just the military.
I remember the russkies used to call us 'decadent Americans'. Well when defense comes last in a long laundry list of things we need desperately, decadent will do until a better word comes along.

You may be right, 11th. Another diversion. We have seen so many calculated diversion in the last 5 years. Ones where Unions have engaged in almost riots, meanwhile Obama is “penning” something again while everyone is looking the other way.

The plan is to keep the bases open and most of the appropriations flowing to campaign donor contractors. The big cuts are to personnel and some systems. This will be the hollow force campaign donor DOD the Dems have dreamed about.
The kenyan wants a new low base line DOD budget for the next round of the sequester. A lot of the politically explosive cuts will be put there to bust the sequestor again.
I don’t think any of this is a surprise. The GOP is in on this. After Ryan-Murray they had to know this was coming and did not sound the alarm.
