Every ally we add means we’re adding an enemy. I’ve got no warm feelings for the current Iranian regime, but at least they are not pretending to be our special friends while agitating for the expenditure of more American lives and money to fight their regional battles. The Iranians want the US out of the Middle East and so do a growing number of Americans, including conservatives.
France shared a border with Germany. They had to have a large army. We do not share a border with any of the scary threats the worrymongers use to frighten nervous people. We don’t need a large standing but rather the national will to control the borders we have.
“Should be a thing of the past” is far from reality. You want to bet your child’s/grandchild’s life on that?
I agree. A nation that sends hundreds of thousands of troops into military campaigns in Third World sh!t-holes halfway around the world while allowing tens of millions of foreign invaders to pour across its borders doesn’t need a large standing army. It needs a full-scale psychiatric examination.
Most countries have an Army, in Germany, an Army has a country.

This is just being done so that the money can go to more bribes for voters, thus the damage will be two-fold.
cut the gays and lesbians first. just think 70,000 to 80,000 active military out looking for employment in an already bloated unemployed workforce looking for work
And what do you think God’s opinion is on our abandonment of Israel and empowering of her enemies?
Ultimately the reason why we have a military is to defend our country against threats. If dear leader is trying to so weaken our military to the point that the military’s ability to perform it’s mission is threatened, then I’d argue it’s the individual state’s responsibility to step in to the gap.
That’s quite the opportunity for the states. Let’s say that a state such as oh, Texas, decided that it’s defense was no longer being adequately provided for. The logical response would be to provide for it’s own defense. Say through a very robust state guard. And let’s not ignore the citizenry. The Swiss model is to make sure that all males are trained and have a fully automatic rifle in the home. I’m sure a state like Texas could do that one better.
Don’t mess with Texas would take on a much more literal meaning.
And unlike the days of the Yom Kippur War, Israel is a established military power well able to take care of themselves.
Hopefully Texas would have more sense than their former governor and not send the Texas militia to Iraq to defend the Rio Grande.
Why WWII, why not WWI, what the hell. More food stamps, cell phones, and welfare for everyone. After all, jobs are for losers, people need the opportunity to spend more time with their families and pursue hobbies and other interests, and that’s a good thing. Right?
Besides, if we can let enough Mexicans infiltrate the border and set up shop, they’ll do the jobs we don’t want to do anyway.
Makes sense, Right?

The national guard once Federalized is no longer under state control. That’s happened a lot in the last 20 years.

Yes, and I suspect the men who drafted the Constitution would be uncomfortable with the uses our imperial presidents have made of their esteemed state militias in recent decades.
Sadly like in Egypt I’d probably welcome a military dictatorship.
