Ukraine's western region of Lviv has reportedly declared independence from the central government.

Hours after protesters seized the prosecutor's office in central Lviv and forced a surrender by interior ministry police, the executive committee of the region council - also called the People's Rada – claimed control over the region.

"The regime has begun active military action against people. Dozens of people have been killed in Kiev and hundreds have been wounded. Fulfilling the will of society, the executive committee of the Lviv region's council, the People's Rada, is assuming full responsibility for the fate of the region and its citizens," read a statement.

The executive committee was led by Petro Kolodiy, chairman of the Lviv region's council.

Lviv lies close to the border with Poland and was one of the venues for the Euro 2012 football tournament. Over the past months, the city has become a powerful engine driving the insurgency against president Viktor Yanukovich.

The region, which is traditionally hostile to the easterner Yanukovich and favours closer ties with the European Union, has a population of 2.5 million.

It is not an independence in common sense of the word, they just declared refusal to follow unlawful orders from criminal regime.

Possibly. If it wasn’t for the Olympics, there’d probably be Sov, er, Russian troops in the streets already.

the People's Rada – claimed control over the region.

Is the People's Rada the legitimate local government or is it a bunch of nobodies that declared themselves the exclusive representatives of the people?

Lviv was part of Poland, called Lwow, until as part of dismemberment of Poland it became part of the Hapsburg Empire rename Lemberg. After WW I and the Polish-Soviet War it became part of Poland again. It became part of the Soviet Union under the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact and confirmed at Yalta. It is the region of Ukraine, Galicia, with the most Western influence.

Putin is sending in “mediators”. Yanukovich is using snipers. This isn’t looking like it’s winding down.

Whatever ethnic Poles remain in Ukraine, are in the Lviv area.

This will not end well and the people of the far West Ukraine will soon be battling with the Ukrainian Army.

The bloodshed will increase significantly.

I believe the central government will survive as they have the support of at least 1/2 the people, most business, and the Russians.

Declaration of Ukrainian Independence, 1941

The Declaration of Ukrainian Independence of June 30, 1941 was announced by the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) under the leadership of Stepan Bandera, who declared an independent Ukrainian State in Lviv. The prime-minister was Yaroslav Stetsko, and the head of Council of Seniors was Kost Levitsky.

The OUN intended to take advantage of the retreat of Soviet forces from Ukraine. Some members thought that they had found a new powerful ally in Nazi Germany to aid them in their struggle against the Soviet Union. Days after the Nazi invasion of Lviv, however, the leadership of the newly formed government was arrested and sent to concentration camps in Germany. Within two years of the declaration, the Nazis had imprisoned or killed 80% of OUN-B leadership.[1]
