Winter at the barricades [Primer on what is happening in Ukraine]
World Magazine ^ | 2/7/14 | Jill Nelson

Posted on 02/19/2014 6:10:49 AM PST by SoFloFreeper

When Ukraine’s largely peaceful anti-government protests turned violent last November, President Viktor Yanukovych attempted to explain away the extreme response of riot police: He could not have protestors in the city center delaying setup for the Christmas tree and ice skating rink. Those comments became the focal point of jokes, but a new joke is going around: How long does it take a Ukrainian to change a light bulb? Two weeks. How long does it take him to build a barricade? Fifteen minutes.

Kiev’s protests have escalated into a movement with military-style camps, barricades massive enough to keep out tanks, and a full-scale takeover of the capital’s main square and government buildings throughout the country.

After months of demonstrations that have at times attracted hundreds of thousands of people, Ukraine’s protests are no laughing matter: At least six people were killed during violent clashes between police and protesters in January. And the government has confiscated cell phone numbers of tens of thousands of protesters in the square, sending them this message: “Dear subscriber: You are registered as a participant in a mass disturbance.”

World magazine is a magazine that seems to be fairly balanced--the journalists and publisher see the world from a solidly Christian perspective.

The entire article taught me more about the two sides in the Ukraine than any dozen so-called "news" reports on television.

Something is happening now. The live feeds were going all night and into the day until about a half hour ago. The police were massing. Looks like it is coming to a head in Kiev.

What a difficult choice:

The bumbling bureaucracy of the EU, which is slowly crumbling from socialism, or

the authoritarianism & possible police state of Russia.

The response of the Obama administration is to dither on the sidelines while making vaguely unhappy comments.

18 people died yesterday in the riots with hundreds wounded.

Obama’s big policy statement yesterday? That relations with Uganda will be strained due to their refusal to embrace homosexuality.

Yeah, and the my concern for the people of the Ukraine is that, if they join the EU, the EU will do a Cyprus or Greece and them. Staying out of the EU, they get to keep what little money they have.

Well from what I have been reading, online, there is suppose to be an upcoming rally in Washington DC on May 16, 2014 called “Operation American Springtime”. Read on Free Republic late last year about it first coming out, I think to get the FR’s founder Jim Robbinson’s endorsement or something to that effect.

Remember this: “Dear subscriber: You are registered as a participant in a mass disturbance.”

Your cell phone tracks your location. Even without GPS, the cell system will know which cell tower you are near, in order to be able to route incoming calls to you.

Checking the logs for which people STAY in a particular area for more than an hour will identify the protestors, unless they turn their phones off BY REMOVING THE BATTERY.
