Skip to comments.Winter at the barricades [Primer on what is happening in Ukraine]

When Ukraines largely peaceful anti-government protests turned violent last November, President Viktor Yanukovych attempted to explain away the extreme response of riot police: He could not have protestors in the city center delaying setup for the Christmas tree and ice skating rink. Those comments became the focal point of jokes, but a new joke is going around: How long does it take a Ukrainian to change a light bulb? Two weeks. How long does it take him to build a barricade? Fifteen minutes.
Kievs protests have escalated into a movement with military-style camps, barricades massive enough to keep out tanks, and a full-scale takeover of the capitals main square and government buildings throughout the country.
After months of demonstrations that have at times attracted hundreds of thousands of people, Ukraines protests are no laughing matter: At least six people were killed during violent clashes between police and protesters in January. And the government has confiscated cell phone numbers of tens of thousands of protesters in the square, sending them this message: Dear subscriber: You are registered as a participant in a mass disturbance.

The entire article taught me more about the two sides in the Ukraine than any dozen so-called "news" reports on television.
Something is happening now. The live feeds were going all night and into the day until about a half hour ago. The police were massing. Looks like it is coming to a head in Kiev.
This article explains the genesis of the conflict.
What a difficult choice:
The bumbling bureaucracy of the EU, which is slowly crumbling from socialism, or
the authoritarianism & possible police state of Russia.
Sounds like the USA in the not too distant future.
The entire world in the not-to-distant future.
The bills are coming due, folks.
Dear subscriber: You are registered as a participant in a mass disturbance.
Great article; thanks for posting this.
18 people died yesterday in the riots with hundreds wounded.
Obama’s big policy statement yesterday? That relations with Uganda will be strained due to their refusal to embrace homosexuality.
Well from what I have been reading, online, there is suppose to be an upcoming rally in Washington DC on May 16, 2014 called “Operation American Springtime”. Read on Free Republic late last year about it first coming out, I think to get the FR’s founder Jim Robbinson’s endorsement or something to that effect.
The S**T is getting ready to hit the fan worldwide it seems.
Keep a close eye on this upcoming rally in Washington DC, I have been reading online, a retired US Army general is organizing for May 16, 2014, calling it “Operation American Springtime”.
Watching what looks now like the singing of the national anthem of Ukraine.
Your cell phone tracks your location. Even without GPS, the cell system will know which cell tower you are near, in order to be able to route incoming calls to you.
Checking the logs for which people STAY in a particular area for more than an hour will identify the protestors, unless they turn their phones off BY REMOVING THE BATTERY.
Went to its Facebook site and it is called “Operation American Spring”.
I thought it was simply turn off the cellphone and it is all done.
Any more info?
Sounds interesting, if it is allowed to happened. You need a permit now comrade.
I am pretty sure they do.
Here is the website:
Got a link to a good live feed?
Is there really only 2 sides?
The NSA can even listen to what is going on with the cell phone turned off!
I don't know that they'd be better off with Russia. Except that the history of Russia and its allies involved immense suffering at the hands of Germany in WW2.
Oh good grief, are we now getting into the Alex Jones area?
Until proven otherwise, I am considering this conspiracy theory stuff right now.
Fox News report:
ABC News: (note: 2006)
Burner phone paid with cash. Old fashioned two way radio’s. Or just show up with Spock ears, clown nose, and a few other things to through off facial recognition software.
This url has the most active live video feeds, all on one page,
This website has a lsit of all trusted media (trusted from the protestors point of view),
The Splino feed has been the most useful to get a grasp of the situation, the Splino guys have been live streaming with cell phones directly while walking through the camp and at the barricades standing next to the molotov and riot shield carrying protestors.
What is amazing is that the Square has dozen plus entrances, the police have no presence at 80%+ of the entrances, and just outside this revolution, Kievans are going about their daily routines as best as possible, and the buses still run, the Square still has electricity, the McDonald’s on the edge of the Square has reopened, food cart vendors roll up every morning and feed the protestors, local car traffic can drive within 2 blocks of the Square, ... etc.
Also, every morning, men carry in construction material and stolen metal work, and women bring in huge amounts of food and blankets, and they reinforce the protest site, over and over.
Saw a video this morning of a woman handing out sandwiches on a platter, at the barricades, while the guys and teenagers taking the sandwiches in one hand, were holding shields or throwing rocks in the other.
Like the President, Russia is a long time enemy of the United States so he could pick the Russian backed government side.
He may try to curry favor with his socialist buddies in the EU so he may side with the protesters.
But then it hit me...Which side is more Christian? He will certainly go against whatever side is most Christian.
Does anyone know the religious inclinations of the Russian backed government groups or the protester groups?
What is the over/under for Viktor Yanukovych inviting the Russians in to save his a$$.
Good article. Thanks for posting.
“Checking the logs for which people STAY in a particular area for more than an hour will identify the protestors, unless they turn their phones off BY REMOVING THE BATTERY.”
Something to keep in mind for Americans who go to protests as well.
Wow - good article. Explains a lot.
“I thought it was simply turn off the cellphone and it is all done.”
Heck, NO. They still track you 24/7 with the cell phone OFF. You need to leave it somewhere where you are not, like back in your car, OR remove the battery, to not be tracked.
This is a very good article. Thank you for posting it .
Prayers for the people of Ukraine for a peaceful resolution of their protest.
