General Denis Mercier, The Chief of Staff of the French Air Force, is visiting Israel this week. According to the Air Force website, so for into his visit, the General has met with the Israeli Air Force Commander in Chief Gen. Amir Eshel, who introduced him to the day-to-day challenges of the skies of the Middle East, and discussed the strengthening of cooperation between the two forces and examining the interests which are common to both.
Later on, the general was impressed by the IAF capabilities presented to him at Tel Nof Airbase and the Southern Hatzerim Airbase, where he joined a sortie in the advanced attack aircraft Ra'am (F-15I) at the "Hammers" Squadron. "This is a large aircraft, with a lot of power and to fly it for the first time was an experience," said Gen. Denis Mercier, in an interview with the IAF journal.
Gen. Denis Mercier served as a fighter pilot on the French aircraft Mirage 2000 and Rafale. During his tenure as Chief of Staff of the French Air Force, the relationship between the force and his Israeli counterpart continued to strengthen - a process that members of both forces have been fostering for five decades. "Yesterday I met veteran Israeli pilots who flew Mirages in the 60’s in operational activities and in wars. Our connections are continuing ever since”.
The French Air Force is considered the fourth largest in the world. In its early 19 years, the Israeli Air Force was based on French means and knowledge, but after the Six Day War, the French imposed an embargo of Israel, and the IAF became American oriented.
