Fire rages and petrol bombs fly through the air as riot police crackdown on the demonstrations against President Viktor Yanukovich in Kiev's Independence Square.

At least eighteen people — including seven policemen and 11 protesters — were killed and hundreds more were injured during clashes in Kiev on Tuesday.

Many were killed by gunshot and hundreds more were injured, with dozens of them in a serious condition, police and opposition representatives said.

Despite Western demands for restraint and dialogue, the state security service first set a deadline for the demonstrators to end disorder or face "tough measures", and then the police advanced into Independence Square, the center of the protest campaign.

The police aren’t taking this seriously. Superior firepower wins the day.

Seven dead policemen indicates that the “freedom fighters” are armed... similar to Syria, actually.

I read that there are 500,000 Ukrainian citizens with firearms licenses. Think that was in the WSJ.

Let’s look at the usual suspects when it comes to eastern European revolutions...

They’ve got a lot of funding from the US government.

I suspect they are hoping to avoid even more serious violence. Already a number of police officers have been killed as well as protesters. I doubt the rest of them want to be in a no holds barred firefight with thousands of their fellow countrymen. Particularly those that were or are presently in the army.

The strife in the Ukraine is more like the precursor to a civil war than the typical kind of protest against a government. Hopefully the situation can be resolved quickly without more violence.

The Berkit is outnumbered. Badly. Both sides have been playing nice...

Up until now...

In five years Obama has lost the Mideast, increased our national debt by $7.3 TRILLION, is in the command of the worst recovery in this country's history, destroyed this country's health care system, lost an Ambassador, turned the IRS on his political enemies and is now losing Eastern Europe. Too bad people believed Senator Whack-a-Doodle that we should not fear an Obama Presidency.

It would laughable were it not so sad.

There is nothing the U.S can do. Unless you want a ground assault.

Get used to a world with a hegemon, it’s here. And China is watching this closely.

I would put snipers on the buildings. When they tried to kill a policeman, a bullet through the skull

Pray for brave Ukrainians!
They had suffered under soviet/Russian empire for too long. Latest push into Russian KGB empire pushed them to raise and resist oppression.
While America is being herded to commie coral by Kenyan, step by step, electing commie NYC mayor, etc., Kenyan is silent. Remember his comment to Medvedev? “Wait for my second term.....”

Prayers indeed are required. It wouldn't surprise that Putin during the Closing Ceremony will have Russian tanks enter Kiev.

Does Obama have a clue where Ukraine is on a map? Just wondering. I know he knows where all the golf courses are.

"lost an ambassador"???....not exactly...he allowed him to be murdered viciously....

and yes, its pretty amazing that no one has moved one iota to impeachment...

I despise a good portion of the American public...

You said, "I would put snipers on the buildings. When they tried to kill a policeman, a bullet through the skull."

I don't think you understand what is going on over there. Their government is corrupt and wants to turn Ukraine back over to the Russians. They are rebelling against fraudulently elected president who has rewritten the constitution illegally to basically give himself dictatorial powers. The corrupt president has just accepted another several billion dollar loan from Russia. They are fighting for the last scraps of freedom that are about to be taken away from them.
