The Coward’s Conundrum (Cruz, McConnell, Cornyn)
Red State ^ | February 15th, 2014 | Erick Erickson

Posted on 02/16/2014 6:20:58 PM PST by xzins

Senators Mitch McConnell and John Cornyn say they put the country first. The debt ceiling needed to be raised. Ted Cruz opposed raising it. So McConnell and Cornyn voted to shut down Ted Cruz. They voted to cut off debate on raising the debt ceiling so that it could be raised.

McConnell and Cornyn have both been very clear about this. John Cornyn told the Austin American-Statesman

“I think it would have been bad for the economy, bad for the American people, and I don’t think it would have been good politics either.”

Mitch McConnell declared it his job to protect the country.

Got that? Had the debt ceiling not been raised it would be “bad for the economy” and “bad for the American people” and the Senate must “protect the country where” it can.

So . . . um . . . if the debt ceiling needed to be raised for the country, the economy, and the people, why did John Cornyn and Mitch McConnell vote against raising the debt ceiling?

They both criticized Ted Cruz for wanting to block raising the debt ceiling, but they voted with Ted Cruz against raising the debt ceiling.

Whaaa…?!?!?!

Mitch McConnell and John Cornyn are cowards. They were in a conundrum. Their constituents did not want the debt ceiling raised. But McConnell and Cornyn wanted the debt ceiling raised. So they shut down Ted Cruz’s filibuster knowing the Democrats would raise the debt ceiling without their votes. They, like their House counterparts, enabled this to happen.

In all their moral preening about what’s good for the country and economy, they were too chicken to actually vote their conscience — they were too chicken to do what they thought was right.

And that is why people hate Washington. Here are two of the most senior Republicans in the Senate who both believed the right thing to do was raise the debt ceiling, but were too chicken to actually cast that vote themselves. Insteaad, they arranged the deck chairs on the Titanic so the Democrats could do it without them. They threw Ted Cruz under the bus only to vote the same why he did on final passage.

Mitch McConnell and John Cornyn fully supported raising the debt ceiling. They both said so. They both said it needed to happen. They were just too chicken to have their finger prints on it.

We need boldness. We need principled leaders. We have too many moral cowards in Washington.

The hypocrisy of the GOP-E, of the McConnell's, Cornyn's, etc. is obvious:

So . . . um . . . if the debt ceiling needed to be raised for the country, the economy, and the people, why did John Cornyn and Mitch McConnell vote against raising the debt ceiling?

They both criticized Ted Cruz for wanting to block raising the debt ceiling, but they voted with Ted Cruz against raising the debt ceiling.

Defeating Cornyn would seal Thad Cochran’s fate in Mississippi and put Mitch right on the edge in Kentucky. KEEP HIM UNDER 50!

That’s a very good point, and I can’t believe that it hasn’t occurred to me before. Of course, they started out by saying that they voted “against” the rise, as if their cloture vote was invisible. It seems that now they’ve realised that won’t work, but neither will this, as you point out!

Mitch is now saying he wanted to save our country by voting no to increasing
the debt ceiling in the second vote.
Which is it Mitch?

And, once again, another article about un-limiting the debt ceiling.

Could be all for raising the debt ceiling, but what they actually did instead was to remove the debt ceiling... for the next 13 months. We now have no limit to the national debt whatsoever. Congratulations McConnell and your GOP-e gang.

Its all rope-a-dope.

Congress sets the budget. GOP controls congress.

They refuse to reduce spending while blaming Democrats. With some justice of course, Dems are gonna do what Dems do. Except the Dems don’t control congress.

They invented the deficit ceiling as a backhanded way of forcing themselves to limit spending, the idea being that if they can’t borrow any more money, they’ll be forced to reduce spending. Which they themselves are in control of. But they don’t reduce spending and when they run smack up against the deficit ceiling they just raise it and blow right on by.

All the while blaming the Democrats, again with good reason. Except that if any Repub dares to get in the way of this little charade, say the rank and file membership (aka “tea party”) or some uppity senator (say, Cruz for example) they go on the attack. They’ll complain about what the Dems are supposedly doing, that they themselves are doing, but they won’t fight them. They save their fight for fellow Repubs who dare to get in the way or shine a light.

Its a Kabuki dance. The senior Repubs use the Dems like a red cape to divert attention from themselves, all the while conspiring to help them achieve their agenda. They will squeeze out a fraction of a percentage point reduction in the budget increase so they can go home and claim to be fighting the good fight, conservative warriors that they are.

Sorry, I disagree. Mere cowardice doesn’t explain the countless acts of betrayal by the gop wing of the uniparty.

Articles such as this act like the latest hike in the debt ceiling is an aberration, a mere failure of character on the part of a few leaders. It isn’t. It’s by design. The gop wing of the uniparty exists as a roach motel for conservatives and conservatism. That it’s doing what it was set up to do shouldn’t be a surprise to any of us.

I also believe McConnell and Cornyn had releases bragging about voting the debt ceiling, while not mentioning they were complicit in getting the damn thing to the floor. Don’t let them off for their subterfuge.

That's what I take the above line in the article to be saying.

I offer no brief for Republicans----but we have to realize that calculating Dems are lying-in-wait..... vote-crazed animals waiting to pounce. Dems every action is "the baiting game"....baiting Republicans into overreaching.

We cannot easily dismiss evil, conniving Democrats.

Look at 'em....Dems are salivating---even relishing the idea of Repubs impeaching Obama---b/c the connivers can turn im/peach/ment into "victimhood"....always a sure Dem vote-getter.

How do we know this?

BACKSTORY Back when Clinton was getting lewinskied in the Oval Office, Reps howled in disgust and went for impeachment......

Hillary took refuge on broadcast TV, doing her "Virgin Mary" act (decked out w/ ropes of virginal pearls) telling Matt Lauer that a "vast-right wing conspiracy" was vilifying her husband.

Voters responded----they saw Republican actions as "overreaching." The Clintons looked like "victims" and Republicans lost seats at midterms.

Lesson learned.
