Matt Bevin: Mitch McConnell can’t win in November

Matt Bevin, the tea party primary challenger aiming to unseat Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, charged Monday that McConnell can’t win a general election.

In remarks at a Washington, D.C. event sponsored by the tea party-affiliated group FreedomWorks PAC, Bevin painted himself as the only Republican who can beat Democratic candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes in what is already among the most high-profile races of the 2014 midterm cycle.

“We run a tremendous risk of losing this seat in Kentucky to someone who does not represent Kentucky values,” Bevin said. “We run the risk of losing this seat because of a sense of apathy and a sense of fatigue for the career politician that is my opponent in this primary, Mitch McConnell.”

Bevin is still a long-shot candidate for the GOP nod — the powerful McConnell leads him by close to 30 points in some polls — but a number of recent surveys have suggested a tough race may lie ahead for the minority leader.

A poll for the Louisville Courier-Journal released last week found him trailing Grimes 42-46 percent and that 50 percent of Republicans surveyed view him unfavorably.

But in that poll, McConnell led Bevin 55-29 percent in the primary, and Grimes led Bevin 43-38 percent in a general election match-up. Still, other polls going back several months have shown a close race against Grimes in the red state, though McConnell is still the favorite.

"though McConnell is still the favorite."

Yeah, the favorite Harry Reid, and Chuck Schumer, and the RNC and the NRSC, all of which consider conservatives the real enemy...because we are!

Will the sniveling RINOs still threaten to “punch our noses” when most of them lose in the next primaries and elections?

Or will they all pretend to be Conservatives and say that they supported the TEA Party all along?

This is funny, because it actually suggests that Bevin doesn't have a chance and then does have a chance. And of course, Politico cites poll results without citing backup. Typical leftist move to try and discourage the challenger.

Two different races. Primary and general. Suggesting he has better odds in the general than the primary.

How much time does Bevin have left to get his name out there? Right now it’s McConnell riding on name recognition only.

"Yeah, the favorite Harry Reid, and Chuck Schumer, and the RNC and the NRSC..."

And the NRA, which also thought Hemorrhoid Reid was the cat's pajamas back in 2010. NRA members, pound their switchboards and let them know your continued membership hinges on their support of Bevin, and not that linguini-spined Bitch McConnell.

Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!

Pshaw, Ann Coulter was singing the praises of RINOs recently, with the sniveling Bill Bennett, and in particular, McConnell, on the basis of needing republicans in office.

these people either have some ulterior motive or they are fearful

If the House and the senate go democrat because the GOP blocks conservatives, or if there are not enough good candidates, what would be the difference between that and having McConnell, Ryan, Cantor, Rubio, Amnesty Paul, Graham and Mccain at the helm who’ve allowed this... Oh! and Bohner... train wreck Benghazi, F and F, Obamacare, $7 trillion in new debt in 5 years?

Let the dems have it, if that’s what the GOP wants.

But give it a fighting chance. Run Bevin and these guys. They have to know they can’t turn around and go lib once they’re in. I do think the conservatives are getting credibility for not wavering in principals.

I don’t listen to a damn thing Ann Coulter says anymore. She’s on the local radio station here every week and I change the station. She was all for Chris Cristie, then she was all for Mitt Romney, now she’s all for Mitch McConnell.

If Arlen Specter was still alive and still a republican and still running, she’d be for him too. The “r” gets her all excited. We look a little deeper.

I’m hoping this “McConnell can’t win” will sink into the people’s minds.

Hell, the establishment does that to our guys. If we turn the tables on them with this and remove McConnell, they will go nuts!

But we have the evidence that moderates don’t win. We have only to look at November, 2012.

I know. It’s not just her. I know people who are mad that conservatives are rejecting boardwalk bridge boy

No one who knows less about the constitution than his opponent can win conservatives. So they’d better have their act together. And scandals. No one has time for a conservative wanna be with scandals

The NRA has always been a single issue PITA.

If they say they support the 2A the NRA hitches their wagon to um.

Seems they have got bit more than a few times doing that.

I don’t give them my money.

I’m no fan of McConnell, and this is not in any way an argument for voting for him, but this is a dumb argument for Bevins and his supporters to make.

It’s predicated upon the assumption that either he can make a solo stand against a candidate (Grimes) fully backed by every level of her Party’s political apparatus, or that he’ll have the full backing of the state GOP (run by McConnell operatives) and national GOP (run by McConnell allies) after he beats McConnell in the primary.

Neither is a good assumption. I think we should all accept that the KY Senate seat will go Dem, regardless of who the GOP nominee is.

On the bright side, I’m certain that the GOP will retain the SC Senate seat when Graham goes down in the primary.

When McConnell gets tossed I’m going to be as happy as when we de-foliated Tom Foley.

Ann lost me as a fan when she started attacking Sarah Palin some years back. I knew right then, that she was an establishment hack, and she proved it by going on to back Christie and Romney. Now you say she's endorsing Mitch McConnell's re-election?

Good grief. If that's true, her name ought to banned from FR.
