With almost all votes counted, a Swiss referendum on whether to bring back strict immigration quotas appears to have passed by a narrow margin.

About 50.5% voted in favour of measures which would end the Swiss-EU free movement of people agreement.

Fiercely independent Switzerland is not a member of the EU, but has adopted large sections of EU policy.

The vote comes amid increasing debate across Europe about migration and the impact of free movement of people.

Switzerland's economy is booming at the moment, and unemployment is low, but many Swiss worry about immigration.

A quarter of the eight million-strong population is foreign, and last year 80,000 new immigrants arrived.

The rich and famous always can get it.

Salman Rusdie can probably be a citizen anywhere he likes, not so for the average Iranian and justifiably so.

Look for many such results this Spring throughout Europe, which is moving to the right due mainly to the issue of immigration and a rejection of the EU. Language, culture, and borders are important no matter how much the political and corporate elites would like to erase them.

The counter-revolution is underway in Europe.

The Swiss are wary because they see what’s going down in Britain, France, Belgium and the rest of Europe how Muzzies are taking it over step by step.
