Look at the FDA's First-Ever Campaign Against Youth Tobacco Use
National Journal ^ | February 4, 2014 | Clara Ritger

The Food and Drug Administration is launching a new campaign against youth tobacco use.

"The Real Cost" advertisements graphically depict the health consequences of smoking, such as tooth loss and skin damage.

Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of disease, death, and disability in the U.S. Every day, more than 3,200 Americans under age 18 try their first cigarette, and more than 700 become regular smokers.

The FDA is targeting its efforts toward the 10 million Americans ages 12 to 17 who have never smoked a cigarette but are open to it.

"We know that early intervention is critical, with almost nine out of every 10 regular adult smokers picking up their first cigarette by age 18," said FDA Commissioner Margaret A. Hamburg in a press release. "Today marks a historic moment as we launch the FDA's first-ever national education campaign to prevent tobacco use among our nation's youth, and we bring to life the real costs that are of the most concern to young people."

The media buy is funded by the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, signed into law by President Obama in 2009.

The yearlong, $115 million ad campaign will air on television, radio, print, and online starting Feb. 11.

Probably because it is not the nicotine that you are addicted to. The reason most approaches to smoking cessation fail, IMO, is that they are grounded in a number of myths, one of which is the extreme difficulty that people have quitting smoking is due to a drug addiction (nicotine), when the real story is much more complicated than that.

Treating an extremely habit forming product as though it were a drug addiction, as expected, fails terribly, as evidenced by the laughably poor performance of both medicinal and non-medicinal approaches to smoking cessation. It also explains why electronic cigarettes are extremely successful, in that they are the only approach that actually addresses the root of the problem, which is that smoking becomes a deeply engrained habit, albeit augmented by a relatively mild addiction, not to nicotine itself, but to a cocktail of chemicals.

The following links give a fairly good overview of some (but by no means all) of those myths:

I think it’s a good idea too. I hope it reaches not just the tobacco crowd but the pot crowd too.

It is costing us a fortune to lock up the drug users. And it’s costing us a fortune to deal with pot’s legacy of mental illnesses such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

The best attack is an information war to prevent people from using in the first place.

A carton every three weeks isn’t bad at all, and isn’t likely to cause problems. One of the other myths, which I remember being repeatedly told in school (there is nothing new in these youth-targeted, expensive, and worthless public relation campaigns), was that there was no safe amount of smoking, and that smoking 1 a day was just as bad as smoking a carton a day. But most doctors that I have talked to about this are convinced that anything around 10 cigarettes a day is very unlikely to cause long-term disease.

In the unintended consequences file goes the following: virtually everyone I knew that smoked smoked a lot, figuring that it didn’t make any difference whether they smoked 5 a day, or 2 packs. Why? Because we all heard the same speeches, and bought into them.

Marlboros contain all kinds of chemicals that are terrible for you. I noticed the same thing. I used to smoke Marlboros, but after I switched, I couldn’t go anywhere near them without getting a splitting headache.

Yabbut, there are hordes of idiots out there who will contend that the "second hand smoke" from that will kill you dead in no time.

While I won't contend that smoking is the most healthy habit, stupidity has probably killed more people, directly or indirectly, than anything else.

But if we addressed that problem, the rest of this dreck wouldn't fly.

Besides, if the kids quit smoking and gain weight, then the anti-fat minions get to take over...

Go figure.

The whole thing has had the air about it of a 'come from behind' victory from the start.

I'm just not sure which behind moved its head over enough to let the whole thing pass.

Maybe they'll just take another hit off that gummint approved (healthy organic all natural) spliff and mellow out...or not.

The heroin addict that just died of an overdose is represented as a “genius overcome by his demons” by the drunk (my theory) Diane Sawyer.

Hollywood drug addicts and sodomites are ALWAYS romanticized.

If some smokers DIDN’T smoke, they’d keel over from the blood pressure that builds up over the bastard Barry Soebarkah and his minions dismantling America.

So, FU, Valerie Jarrette, Manchelle and Barry and the nannies telling us how to enjoy life.

I’ll enjoy vices YOU don’t approve of and you and your MEDIA can continue to sanctify the heroin addicts and the sodomites—and the pot smokers.

(and don’t forget Jessica Savitch—the coke-head, who eventually died—she was a member of the MSM, and had a made for tv movie made about her. She “had demons” too.)

Even with a champion level marijuana smoker playing president and stinking up the White House, the Feral Government is still waging its war against demon tobacco.

CVS to stop selling tobacco products

http://www.wtop.com/628/3556581/CVS-Caremark-plans-stop-selling-tobacco-products

Nanny-staters want to ban things like soda in schools and years ago of course we have booze prohibition (how did that turn out?). Tobacco? Note that’s still legal, and banning that would cause harm for tobacco companies, but more importantly TAX REVENUE. Think how much money the govt makes off cig taxes (and, for that matter taxes on gasoline. For all the complaints about Big Oil profiting on petroleum,
guess who makes even more profits than THEY do? Uncle Sam!)

>>The heroin addict that just died of an overdose

Philip Seymour Hoffman was part of Mayors Against Illegal Guns (did some kind of narration in an ad, etc.) Apparently he was not part of People Against Illegal Drugs. It’s a case of responsibility—it was his own decision to start using heroin and yes he became an addict and it’s very tough to get that monkey off your back, but it was his own decision.

So his death wasn’t because someone shot him...the fatal
“shooting” (up) was by his own hand, into his arm...

Ah-ha! That explains why the loser is being mourned all over the internet. I knew it had to be something.

Appreciate the enlightenment.
