Op-Ed: A Long Walk Uphill

A lot of noise has been generated by Vladamir Putin’s negative stance on homosexuality, and by the (falsely so-called) moral posturing and preening in the West as we resolve (courageously!) to be represented at the coming Winter Olympics in Sochi by homosexual athletes. That’ll show him.

Actually, it won’t show him anything. What makes Putin tick? What’s his game? What is he up to in all this? His basic ideology—after Putinism—is nationalism. He is therefore not interested in developing an international consensus on exploring sexual identities. He would be if something like that could be played out to Russia’s advantage, but it doesn’t so he isn’t.

He is interested in the prestige and survival of Russia, and he is frankly up against it hard. If he went along with the international pressure to join with us in the great gender bender, after the applause of the sexually degraded West had all died away, he would still be there with his glaring problem. And what is that?

In order to function as a replacement rate, the birth rate of a nation must be an average of 2.1 children per woman. That is what is necessary simply to stay in the same place, right where you currently are. To grow or advance, the rate has to be higher than that. The birth rate in Russia currently is around 1.7. The abortion rates there are among the highest in the world, and the consequences of this have not been lost on their leadership. Their population is hemorrhaging, and they need to get it stabilized and under control as a simple matter of national security. They have had some (very) modest success in the last few years, but they are still in a very bad place. The wisdom of Solomon is pertinent here. “In a multitude of people is the glory of a king, but without people a prince is ruined” (Prov. 14:28, ESV).

In our culture wars, and our debates over same-sex mirage, the two sides differ on many things. But one of the things that we might be able to reach consensus on is that that the birth rate among homosexual couples is going to be a lot lower than it is among heterosexuals. So with all this said, Russia needs a thriving homosexual movement like they need a sucking chest wound. They already have far too many reasons and excuses not to have children. Whenever a people have a large number of children, it represents a robust faith in the future. It is not my place here to say whether such faith is misplaced or not—sometimes it is, and sometimes it isn’t. But we can say that when it comes to the converse, and a people are refusing to have children, that means that their main interest lies in the present, or in the past—and that is what they will get.

Among other things, this means conservatives in the West ought not to turn this realpolitik stance of Putin’s into some kind of moral stand that makes him a paragon of our forgotten virtue. We should not applaud him for being the leader of an international moral majority. The only area where I would be willing to applaud Putin is in the area of “not being stupid.” That is better than nothing, I suppose, and there are times when we could use some of that over here. But at the end of the day, he is just trying to figure out how to get his country into a lifeboat—and the dire consequences of not doing so are more evident to him than they currently are to us.

So we need to think ahead. We need far more than such desperate measures, and last-minute Putin is not a model to imitate. In order to have a right understanding of sexuality, we need a right understanding of the future. And in order to have that, we must have a return to Jesus. In the meantime, it is a complete waste of time trying to be indignant over Putin’s back-against-the-wall stance, It would be better for us to save our breath for walking uphill—because we have a similar long climb ahead of us.

Putin does stand up for the Russian future. I wish our leadership would stand up for ours.

I wish our leadership would stand up for ours.

The left has succeeded in branding "nationalism" as a flaw, a false path, a likely evil.

As opposed to what? Chaos? Moral indifference? Somnalence and surrender?

Nationalism is merely tending to the health, strength and intelligence of the family and community, on the large scale.

True. I like these quotes from the article:

“In our culture wars, and our debates over same-sex mirage, the two sides differ on many things. It’s because of their idiotic love affair with internationalism and a one-world socialistic state.

Yes. And also their loathing of a strong, moral America.

They don’t just loathe a strong, moral America.

They loathe all of Western Civilization.

Indeed. Because Western Civilization is ultimately Christian Civilization.

I really liked the freudian slip of calling it

same-sex MIRAGE, cause it’s a pale illusion of marriage.

Putin at least understands the threat that muslim
procreation has aimed at the heart of the western
civilizations.
