The GOP and Social Issues: Another Perspective
PJ Media ^ | January 29, 2014 | Andrew C. McCarthy

On the question whether the Republican Party ought to de-emphasize social issues, I find myself more in the Bryan Preston camp than in Roger Simon’s. That’s ironic because, though I’m drawn to the logic of Bryan’s “Where do the surrenders end?” argument, the brute fact is: the political divide in the country has almost nothing to do with logic. It is, instead, about “us versus them.” Roger thus gets closer to the heart of the matter when he contends that “fairly or not,” opposition to gay marriage – today’s hotly contested social issue – is used “to paint the right as bigots. And young people … don’t want to hang with bigots[.]”

Where I respectfully suggest that Roger goes wrong is in too narrowly applying the truth he has hit upon. It is about much more than young voters. Social conservatives can be alienated, too. While Republicans might peel off a few social liberals by shelving opposition to gay marriage, the party cannot win without the social conservatives, a major part of its base.

Christians do not surrender the social issues.

IF the GOP is interested in ever winning another election, they won’t surrender the social issues either.

On gay marriage, my reply to liberals is, “When Barack Obama was first elected, he opposed gay marriage, and you voted for him and did not call him a bigot.”

All laws to some degree are connected to social issues. Tax laws that contain and expand credits for married couples with children, for example, help strengthen the family and reduce the levels of poverty.

Social conservatism and fiscal conservatism go hand-in-hand. The two simply cannot be separated. They are to politics what peanut butter and chocolate are to Reese's cups.

Social issues? The GOP’s abandoned the fiscal issues as well, and that a long time ago. They’ve only paid lip service to conservatism (it’s only liberals that try to split conservatism between social and fiscal; the typical divide-and-conquer tactic). How can they be believed?

All political calculation. Nothing about right and wrong, good and evil. And certainly not the good of society. I loathe these people, and I can hardly bring myself to vote anymore.

Does it shut them up, or do they find some other diversionary argument to try and get back on their feet with?

Well, the GOP has obviously given up on BOTH fiscal and social.

Personally, I consider myself 50/50, both fiscal and social conservative. But I think there is a difference. The fiscal side deals with a certain ideological approach to governing. The social side, however, that speaks to one’s very identity. One’s very soul. If you sell out your soul... you really have nothing. Nothing at all.

The Republican Party:

Its only principle is to have no principles.
Its only strategy is preemptive surrender.
Its only plan for victory is to alienate its base as much as possible.

Absolutely correct. Everybody is “fiscally conservative;” no one believes in careless spending. But the key to prudent spending, the other half of it, is a social policy that promotes personal responsibility, self-sufficiency to help assure that people do not become needs for government funds.

"Does it shut them up, or do they find some other diversionary argument to try and get back on their feet with?"

You know liberals - they come up with a diversionary argument like, "Well, Obama wasn't actively opposing gay marriage by giving money to its opponents."
