Doctor walks six miles in snow to perform life-saving brain surgery at Trinity Medical Center

Dr. Zenko Hrynkiw was at Brookwood Medical Center Tuesday morning when he was needed for emergency brain surgery at Trinity Medical Center.

The problem was the sudden snowstorm had locked down traffic, and the neurosurgeon didn't get farther than a few blocks.

"The cell service was bad so we were fading in and out," said Steve Davis, charge nurse in the neuro intensive care unit at Trinity. "At one point, I heard him say, 'I'm walking.'"

Heroes come to us in many ways and form many walks of life, but a commonality among them is most often a uncompromising fidelity to a oath they have sworn.

There’s this doctor - a hero.

Then there are those that go into politics.

Why do the losers become the leaders?

If there’s really nothing else that they can do, why not have death panels for them...as they want to do with us?

Thanks.

He’s “old skool”

Dedication of that sort..doesnt seem to be the hallmark of the “new skool”.

There are no very young brain surgeons. It takes too long to become a brain surgeon, so by the time you become one you're not young anymore.

However a guy who is a Polish (?) immigrant and managed to requalify as a neurosurgeon in the US has more guts than most and knows more about sacrifice and work. He's also probably used to cold and snow, too.

Then there’s these guys, who wouldn’t get up from their table (or possibly their beds) to walk across the street to save a dying man! As someone said, “look for the union label.”

There are a lot of people like that in all walks of life. They’re not uncommon in the military. But we don’t often hear about them. This is not to denigrate the noble heart of this fine man; he is a hero. It’s just that there are still many proud Americans with moral courage who quietly do what’s right.

oh those horrible overpaid doctors.....you know the ones that actually STUDY in college and take the HARD courses and pass the hard courses and then have medical school and internships and work long hours on holidays and weekends....yes, those horrible horrid doctors.....I’d love to see your typical teacher have 10% the devotion, academic study, and morals and ethics as most doctors....

Compare and contrast with the thread above telling of how DC firefighters refused to aid an elderly man who collapses ACROSS the street from their firehouse.

Good on you, doctor!

We were able to spend a lot of time with physicians and surgeons recently when our son was in trauma ICU for weeks. Most if not all of the young residents would brave a bit of snow and ice to get to their jobs. I could see every one of them living at the hospital for weeks and doing a great job. Hubby liked the resident physicians better than the standoffish older docs. But that is probably because the resident physicians were around all of the time and talked to us.

All the neurosurgeons we have known would do as this guy did. It is just the way they are.

Back in the 1950s, my wife's late father had become very ill with scarlet fever. Three or four evenings a week for several months, their doctor would get on the Sand Springs Line street car from downtown Tulsa to Sand Springs. He would administer treatment, then take the street car home.

He, this physician and others like them are outstanding, caring people. God bless them.
