Re: Seattle at Denver in frigid, friggin' Jersey

Fugetaboutit!!! Mile High Manning's Broncos rule... as I cannot root for the Seahags--

However, if Pete's Coffee Kids sneak in a win... I'll survive.

Well, since this is the last game this season... I shall reflect on things I recall from the past--

"When it's third and ten, you can have the milk drinkers... I'll take the whiskey drinkers every time." - Max McGee, Green Bay Packers receiver.

"My knees look like they lost... a knife fight with a midget." - E.J. Holub, Kansas City Chiefs linebacker regarding his 12 knee operations

"I don't know... I only played there for nine years." - Walt Garrison, Dallas Cowboys fullback when asked if Tom Landry ever smiles.

"The film looks... suspiciously like the game itself." - Bum Phillips, New Orleans Saints, after viewing a lopsided loss to the Atlanta Falcons.

"Because if it didn't work out... I didn't want to blow the whole day." - Paul Hornung, Green Bay Packers running back on why his marriage ceremony was before noon.

"I won't know... until my barber tells me on Monday." - Knute Rockne, when asked why Notre Dame had lost a game.

"The only difference between me and General Custer is that... I have to watch the film on Monday." - John McKay as the first head coach of the expansion Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

And the Broncos are going to win Sunday, PERIOD... or all my drinks will be be put on all y'all Seattle Fans' tabs--

I could tell that McKay rubbed off on Spurrier for that one year Spurrier played for him in Tampa.

I’m pulling for the Seahawks (lived there during the Dave Kreig/Steve Largent/Chuck Knox...Brian Boswell :{) years). I’ve got a lot of respect for Russel Wilson after seeing him in his final year at Wisconsin. I’ll be fine if the Broncos win because of Manning and Montee Ball, another Wisconsin connection. Either way I’ll learn the result the following morning.

Anyway, I turned the tv on mid-morning to the nfl channel,

the woman (nfl am program I believe) interviewed Richard Sherman’s brother, then asked the brother what he would wear on arrival in NJ. !!!??!! REALLY ??!!!!

All they (the channel) have to do is run past games (all the games) non-stop, skip all that ‘expert analysis’ and the dudettes. Can’t stand all that talking and all about trivial things too.

[Ahem, same goes for mlb channel.] (rant off)

Like I really needed another reason to dislike him.

I’m a Seattle fan, and even I have started to tire of it. But some of the stuff is interesting. Sherman’s brother is his manager of sorts, so is pretty involved in everything. Also interesting to hear some of the stories of the Denver guys.

E. J. Holub started Superbowl 1 on defense as Linebacker. He started Superbowl 4 on offense as Center. He is the only player to ever do this.

Even after nine knee surgeries, Holub was a leader, a "holler guy", and he was a team player, enduring pain to lead his team. He would spend hours in the training room, watching blood and liquid drain from his knee, then go out to the field and perform as though he was suffering from no physical problem.

The Chiefs/Texans also had a tight end (Fred Arbanas) back then who was sucker punched on the street blinding him in one eye. He made two AFL Allstar games (which are considered as AllPro games) after that. Those boys were rugged.

I forgive Fred for being a Yankee (born January 14, 1939, in Detroit, Michigan)... and for being a Democrat (In 1992 he ran in the Democratic primary against incumbent U.S. Congressman Alan Wheat, but did not win)--

But if he ever... gives up drinking... we split the blanket!

When I was a teen in the 60’s I used to work for a guy who had a 2000 customer paper route. Fred was one of our customers (lived real close to another customer that was part of the Kansas City mob but that’s a different story). He used to come out and talk to us and was a real nice guy. (Dems back then were almost normal). Later my dad who installed fancy showers worked in his house and noticed his accent was close to my moms’ who was a Yooper. Turns out his wife was from the same town in the upper peninsula where I was born and he had picked up her dialect.

When MacKay was at USC there was a coaches’ press breakfast every Monday morning during the season. The LA Times sports section carried a report. The other coaches (Rams, UCLA etc) did about 15 minutes each including questions and MacKay took up to an hour. Everybody wanted to hear him, including the other coaches.

Lazy ESPN experts don’t have their picks in yet.

I am taking Denver, 21-20. Manning will dig deep so his little brother won’t have more rings than him anymore, the ultimate motivation.

Hell yeah, “Justified” for me too, thank goodness for basic cable.

Maybe I’ll watch the 50 different Republican replies later.

That’s at 9, 10 Eastern though, what’s on at 8, hmm crappy ep of Star Trek on BBC America. I guess I’ll fling my poo at Obama for a while. Blackhawks game starts at 8:30.

I thought it was low temps that got him. I heard mid 30’s at KO and not enough wind to be a factor.

Cold weather effecting games is fine but I don’t like for the SB.

After the Forty-Niners game a reporter asked Wilson what he was thinking about as he was taking a knee at the end of the game to go to the Super Bowl.

It was something to the effect of “To think I might have picked baseball.”
