'McCarthyism' by the numbers
Breitbart ^ | 1/21/2014 | M. Stanton Evans

Posted on 01/21/2014 8:50:27 PM PST by Viennacon

The orchestrated attack on Diana West’s important book, American Betrayal, has been brutal and unseemly, but in one respect at least it has served a useful purpose.

This lone positive angle--counter-intuitive at first glance--is that her iconoclastic Cold War history has sparked a barrage of charges about “McCarthyism” and the senator from Wisconsin who gave his name to a decisive epoch in America’s long death struggle with the Kremlin.

As is well-known, “McCarthyism” was an alleged focus of political evil in the 1950s: accusations of Communist taint, without any factual basis; bogus “lists” of supposed Communists who never existed; failure in the end to produce even one provable Communist or Soviet agent, despite his myriad charges of subversion.

Such is the standard image of “McCarthyism” set forth in all the usual histories and media treatments of the era. Such is the image relied on by the critics of Ms. West to discredit her book and dismiss her as a crackpot and “conspiracy theorist.” By arguing that pro-Red elements in our government exerted baleful influence on US policy to suit the aims of Moscow, it is said, she becomes “McCarthy’s heiress,” reprising the evils of the fifties.

All of which, from my standpoint, has one beneficial feature--though it doesn’t make things less unpleasant for Ms. West. It pushes the issue of McCarthy and McCarthyism to the forefront, where it ought to be, and where it is now possible to view his cases in ways not feasible years ago when the relevant data were not open to the public.

As many of us already knew, Joe McCarthy was not some 'wacko bird'. He was one of the great patriots of the last century, and probably the biggest roadblock to the communist subversion agenda that is still taking place to this day.

No wonder the left are drawing their swords as soon as someone dare look into the facts of the 'red scare', lest they find all the little dots to be connected, some of which end with president Hussein.

Thank you, senator. May you rest in peace.

The success of the war on McCarthy gave us the socialist in the White House today.

And lets not forget, he was betrayed by his own party. Ringing any bells?

We need Joe as badly today as we did then. We need a platoon of Joes.

We agree. Many of his targets, indicated as unsubstantiated and unwarranted attacks were against “Hollywood”. How right he was. I watched the McCarthy hearings as a kid. Hollywood destroyed our morals, families, patriotism and continues its political subversion. I would like to ask them, “Are you now, or have you ever been a member of the Communist Party”...or Democrat Party.

Bang on.

“Give me Hollywood for six months and I will convert the world to communism.”

- Stalin

They had completely infiltrated Hollywood and still do today. Just look at Sean Penn. From the parasitic larvae the Soviet Union planted, blossomed a huge writhing maggot that we see today.

Nixon was also one of the early commie fighters that was targeted by them.

None of his targets had anything to do with Hollywood. That's as silly as the prevailing disinformation that "Senator" McCarthy headed the "House" Committee on Unamerican Activities. McCarthy was after Communists in the Administration and State Department.

The so-called Hollywood "Black List" was the result of hearings before the aforementioned House committee and was instituted by the studio heads themselves. The embedded Communists Joe was after have muddied the waters to the point that even McCarthy defenders have bought into their lies.

What would people like McCain, Graham and Boehner be calling for? Special election? Vote of lack of confidence? Impeachment? Treason? I don't keep up with the little nuances like that.

Oh, they’d have never let McCarthy get elected in the first place. With the blob that is Karl Rove picking and choosing the candidates, they’d be sure to bankroll a moderate.

This is half right. But, the real reason she is being trashed is that she dared challenge the “GOOD WAR” narrative about WWII. Anyone who questions the wisdom of our slaughter in behalf of Stalin will be slimed by both Left and Right.

I think many forget how popular and influential Joe was. If he’d campaigned actively for Lodge against JFK, JFK wouldn’t have won his senate seat. And Ike was scared to death of him.

I agree. I wonder if he knew just how right he was? I tend to think the communist infiltration of the government, was greater than even he thought. The bastards aren't even trying to hide it anymore.
