Poll: Republican Land Leads Peters in Michigan Senate Race

The Michigan Senate race was supposed to be an easy win for Democratic Rep. Gary Peters, but former Republican Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land has taken a commanding lead in the latest poll released Monday over her Democratic counterpart.

Land has an 8 point lead in the Conservative Intel/Harper Poll of Michigan conducted Jan. 7-8 of 1,004 likely voters, with 44 percent of Michigan voters saying they would vote for Land over 36 percent who said they would vote for Peters.

Land also lead by 2 percentage points in the survey from liberal-leaning Public Policy Polling in December by 42-40 percent over Peters.

Democratic Sen. Carl Levin announced in March 2013 that he plans to retire after his sixth term is up at the end of 2014. The Michigan senator also chairs the Senate Armed Services Committee.

According to PPP, Obamacare has put Democrats who were considered favorites in the 2014 midterm elections in vulnerable positions, noting that the trend started after open enrollment for the new healthcare law began in October 2013.

"Democrats who looked a few months ago to be favorites for governor and Senate in Michigan are now on the ropes, casualties of the dip in favor of the Democrats around the country over the Affordable Care Act," according to a statement released by the

I can’t believe how well this race is going. Land gets high marks as the most improved candidate of this election cycle (she ran a disastrous race for Governor in 2010). If our side wins this race, it’s a big leap towards throwing Harry Reid out of his Majority Leader post.

I don’t even remember Land running for governor in 2010 but that was a crowded race with unions supporting Snyder in the primary.

Wayyyy too far out, and MI is a perennial disappointment. I mean, I’ll take it for now, but call me in late October if this lead hasn’t evaporated. I remember how Harry Reid was being crushed by a “generic” Republican, then won.

Land is kind of unusual in the sense that she comes with a purebred GOPe pedigree but has strong tea party support.

Just take a look at the pictures of Peters and Land and just ask yourself which one is the most likely to win!

“Land gets high marks as the most improved candidate of this election cycle (she ran a disastrous race for Governor in 2010). “

This is why Christie will not be nominated for potus. Very few can run a good large scale campaign the first time out of the gate.

It is also why the GOP usually nominated the person next in line. That is because the next in line has usually tried and failed and the failure has prepared him/her for the next level.

“she comes with a purebred GOPe pedigree but has strong tea party support”

GOPe pedigree means she is experienced and seasoned regardless of the issues.

Teaparty means she is conservative on issues.

The GOP wanted Dave Camp to run in this race but he turned it down. The speculation is that most republicans in Michigan have the utmost respect for her. I know that our state Attorney General has already endorsed her and I believe Larry Arn of Hillsdale college has voiced his support as well.

Land was elected to the RNC along with Dave Agema in a tea party uprising at the state party convention.

What bothers me about some teaparty candidates is that they are inexperienced doufuses who eventually end up embarassing both gop and teaparty.

Apparently Land is not one of the above.

A “generic Republican” would have crushed Reid. Sharon Angle blew that race, badly.

The problem is that everybody thinks they need to be a firebrand when it really isn't necessary and most can't pull it off without saying something stupid. Terri Land has been in statewide politics long enough to know better than try to be the firebrand she isn't while remaining vocal on the most prominent issues of the day. At the end of the day, this is definitely one case where the republican is better than any democrat.

She’s experienced. She knows the workings of a statewide campaign in Michigan, remains reasonably popular, and most importantly has money to burn.

The AG’s crackdown on voter fraud will help too.

I think I just saw an ad against Peters, pointed out his failings, and basically just made him a laughingstock.

There was no 1st tier generic republican. It was either Angle or the ‘chicken lady’ and Angle was the better shot.

I disagree strongly. Angle’s crapitube was crystal clear from past races, whining for a REVOTE after losing a US House primary and failing to beat a RINO State Senator one on in the next election.

Lowden could not have possibly done worse.

Danny Tarkanian (my first choice of those 3) BTW placed 3 points behind Lowden in a close third, it was a 3 way race.

Peters is a laughing stock. The guy’s a doofus. I think Democrats would have rather had someone else jump in, but their bench in Michigan isn’t as strong as it once was.

Peters is following Braley’s lead just a stonesthrow away in Iowa, hoping his tactics used to get his congressional House seat will work statewide in a senate race. But Peters isn’t Braley. He’s a buffoon who runs the standard Democrat play with the low info voters in his district. He eeked out a victory in 2010 over Rocky Raczkowski 50% to 47%, with a Libertarian spoiler candidate in the mix. So they redistricted him to a much safer overwhelmingly Democrat district for 2012. The guy just plays the victimhood card, typical ‘dirty air, dirty water’ schtick. He’s beatable.
