Brooklyn - Council Member Inez Barron is opposed to her Council district being the site for Denny’s Restaurant reported new location on Pennsylvania Ave between Linden Boulevard and Stanley Avenue.
“It is insulting for Denny’s to seek to come into a community that is Black and Latino. Just as we fought successfully to keep Wal-Mart with a similar history of discrimination and low wage workers with minimal benefits from coming to our community, we will wage the battles necessary to keep Denny’s out,” Councilmember Barron says.
"Denny’s racist and discriminatory past cannot be ignored. In 1994, Denny’s paid out an historic $54 million in a class-action suit after black customers all across the United States were discriminated against, refused service, and forced to wait for their food for long periods of time. They were even forced to pay more than white customers. Even recently, in 2011, Denny’s settled another class-action lawsuit for $1.3 million after being sued for not reasonably accommodating a disabled person. This is unacceptable," she adds.
On the same block where Denny’s plans to open, there are a plethora of such institutions including McDonald’s, Popeye’s, White Castle, Burger King, Checkers and Wendy’s - and a Subways is a block away.
“We don’t need any more unhealthy fast food restaurants paying slave wages in our neighborhood. Enough is enough. Moreover, East New York deserves better. We will not let up in the fight against Denny’s,” Barron says.
Currently, Councilmember Barron is looking towards legal action along with seeking a meeting with owners to apprise them of our community’s opposition to such a disrespectful commercial business coming into an already overcrowded fast food strip.
Doesn’t New York City have a racist and discriminatory past, when you get right down to it?
Why would Dennys want to go there? Don’t they care if their employees get tips?

Amazing that they want to fight Denny’s isn’t it? Do they want to drive all economic development and jobs out of there? Does any business have to pass muster with the PC police?
How is minimum wage considered slave wages? What are slave wages? Isn’t it a fact that slaves do not get paid for their work? What are these people smoking? Are they liberal?
When I was in high school we didn’t have a Denny’s around, but there was a Sambos we used to hang out at on a late night out.
Denny’s is where they go to fight. Do a Youtube search on Denny’s.

I took your advice and YouTubed Denny’s. Out popped a string of clips of black patrons fighting. Unbelievable.
Seriously. It’s like a law. You must fight at Denny’s.

Let her kill all the business in her district. Eventually nature will take its course and everyone will leave, except a desperate few, like Detroit.
There are no high paying businesses clamoring to get in. And no “entrepeneurs” who will magically start and run something better.

LOL, I’m sure Gordon Ramsey, et al. will be flocking to open gourmet restaurants once they see the warm and welcoming attitude of the “community leaders”.
I loved that book when I was little. (Notice that he's the hero of the story, right? I thought it was felonious not to have positive books about people of "color.") Meanwhile, I was puzzled about how tigers could turn into butter, but I can't say it bothered me deeply.
