President Obama on Tuesday praised senators for advancing emergency legislation to extend unemployment insurance benefits and urged lawmakers to approve the measure and send it to him quickly.
Speaking at an event in the East Room of the White House just moments after the 60-37 vote in the Senate, Mr. Obama said that the legislation would restore benefits to millions of people who are struggling to find work in an economy that is still recovering from a deep recession.
“If this doesn’t get fixed, it will hurt about 14 million Americans over the course of this year,” Mr. Obama said. “Congress should pass this bipartisan plan right away and I will sign it right away.”
The president spoke in front of a group of unemployed people who had stopped receiving government support when the emergency insurance program expired just after Christmas. Mr. Obama rejected the argument made by some Republicans that extending the benefits would remove the incentive to keep looking for a job.

If as what Obama had recently announced that 2014 will be a great year for the economy, why then the need to extend the benefits at a cost of a billion dollars a week, when instead of the government, the economy would insure the income that the jobless have currently failed to secure for themselves?

What I’m puzzled about is how the “Senate” controls this when it’s a spending issue that by law has to originate in the House? Not that Boner would do anything to reign in spending.
Folks that have lost their jobs should be helped. One needs to go through an investigation to determine if they are eligible for UI. If a person has lost their job due to conditions beyond their control and are having trouble finding work..yes, they should be helped. It averages about 300 a week...probably just enough to put food on the table and pay a gas bill. I’m for helping...as long as it takes.
It’s probably a safe bet that nearly everyone who was receiving these benefits wants them to continue.

So, you’re willing to foot the bill out of the kindness of your heart? It must be nice to be so wealthy that you are offering to pay for all those people. You ARE proposing this charity spending with your own money, aren’t you?

And why Mr President is this necessary? You have been President for 5 years now. Where are the jobs? Oh that is right, Obamcare caused thousands to lose their jobs or to become part timers. Easy to see why you would want to see unemployment extended. I think most Americans would rather have a job then a government check.........
It’s the Christian thing to do. People that have lost their jobs duto conditions beyond their control should be helped.
HOWQ the system works needs to be revised. The old terms simply can't stand anymore.
The Republicans are morons. First they cancel funding which hurts them greatly by those that held jobs, then they pass it anyway which gives Zero a win.

If you subsidize something (unemployment), you get more of it.
Stupid is as stupid does.
After one year, it is no longer unemployment insurance - it is WELFARE.
If a person can not find a job - any job within a 365 day period, they may as well be honest with us and themselves by joining the welfare class.
Then you help them. I’m tired of it. If you can’t find a job in a year then you need to apply for welfare, not continue to receive unemployment benefits.
UI benefits allow you to do this, but you may take any job you wish at any rate.
If you are hungry - get a JOB and earn the “measly” 300 bucks that UI brings in.
