With the Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) program facing a bleak future in the Democratic-controlled Senate, President Obama is taking the lead in pressuring Congress to temporarily restore benefits for the 1.3 million long-term unemployed Americans who were cut off when the program (Long-term unemployed face life without emergency benefits) on Dec. 28.

Mr. Obama will continue a public show of support for an extension in a speech Tuesday, where he will be accompanied by Americans who have lost their benefits. In addition those who have already been dropped from the program, 1.9 million Americans will lose benefits in the next six months if Congress doesn’t act.

[snip]...Mr. Obama increased the frequency of his request for a fix, and made it the topic of his first weekly address of 2014.

Unemployment benefits are essentially a mandatory insurance policy your employer and the employee are forced to pay on your behalf. You can’t opt out. So while you are employed this is in effect coming out of YOUR paycheck.
The correct way to handle unemployment is either:
- make the coverage optional so that the employer can pay more money up front to the employee.
- Pay out all benefits in one lump sum just like any other insurance settlement with a valid claim on a loss.
If paid in a lump sum most people would have incentive to find work immediately.

Boehner is a shaft giver himself and IMO should be out of power.
The simple word NO will suffice from any party with a spine, so yes the Republicans could have trouble with this as more of them are voted to retirement.

I think the extension should be renamed the “Obama economic failure Act”.

What does unemployment pay? $1100-$1200 a month? WTH are these people doing with that? Buying a bag of doritos and paying their cell phone bill? Do they live in their parent’s basement?

Frankly, until we find a way to ‘shame these democrats’ into admitting it is their own policies that “require” an ongoing extension of benefits when unemployment is claimed to be below 8%...we will never fix the real economy.

IMO, since the Pubbies are eventually going to cave on this anyway, they should just get it over with and pull the plug on his little sideshow.

We always seem to get the worst of both worlds....additional unwarranted spending AND Democrats bashing us about the face and head for weeks at a time.

Oh heck. Why not just have a national minimum guaranteed income to be paid for by the people who have jobs.

This perhaps is his only issue.

No one believes lucifercare, immagration just won't be discussed (imo), Republicans and The Tea Party have survived every attack and his tranny "wife" wants nothing to do with him.

We may not be able to impeach him ( I really want to think momentum is building ), but he can be shown to be the assclown embarrassment he is.

I’m sure they “feel” pressured, when they are not rolling on the floor, laughing at him. ;-)

Agreed. Get it over with for now so it isn’t an issue. Fight it later from a stronger position.

It ( 17.2 billion) went to all his big political donors and their "green" projects .... they turned around and funneled it back. I saw Ed Henry talking about it to Megyn Kelly last night .... here's a link for you (Nov. article):

“””Unemployment benefits are essentially a mandatory insurance policy your employer and the employee are forced to pay on your behalf. You can’t opt out. So while you are employed this is in effect coming out of YOUR paycheck.””””

Maybe it’s different where you live. Around here it comes completely out of the EMPLOYERS pocket. When the unemployment fund gets low our rates go up. As an employer I have had enough of this “emergency” unemployment funding. It needs to stop.
