Jobless benefits bill clears key Senate hurdle, over GOP complaints on cost(Reid's subject change)

A controversial jobless benefits bill narrowly cleared a key Senate hurdle on Tuesday, over the objections of Republicans who complain the $6 billion measure is not paid for.

Senators voted 60-37 to advance the bill extending long-term jobless benefits, which expired Dec. 28. Democrats needed 60 votes to move the bill forward.

But Republicans blasted Democratic leaders for pushing the bill without any plan to offset the cost elsewhere in the budget.

"This is all borrowed -- every penny of it," Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., told Fox News.

Backers of the extension still need to clear several additional votes in the Senate, before the GOP-controlled House can even consider it. House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer, of Maryland, voiced hope that the Senate could pressure the House to act on the bill.

Fox is reporting that Obama has gathered a group of long-term unemployed “victims” for a “scathing speech and photo op” moments after this was defeated.

I'm a little confused. The article says it passed the Cloture vote.

Your post is spot on. I have a BS and have started my Master’s yet still have a hard time landing even part time work, as I have recently begun sending out my CV for PT work instead of just FT as I was doing previously. I am amazed at the headlines which claim the economy is recovering. Does not feel that way to me.

Nowhere are people getting 99 weeks anymore. Even in the highest unemployment states, I believe the max is now 72. So enough with the 2 year nonsense.....that ain’t happening anymore.

Yeah, either Ayotte got her vote wrong or McQueeg screwed up. Ayotte always clears her vote with McQueeg and Linda Graham before casting a vote.

If anybody in congers was actually interested in creating jobs then Boner and the slugs could include approval for the Canadian oil pipeline in the unemployment extension bill. You figger they are gonna extend but doing it without getting something from the Kenyan would be just plain incompetent——but that wouldn’t be news either, I guess?

RE :”So I guess ryan’s grand bargain w/ Murray was a lie.”

Not as it relates to this.

Dems are doing this because they didn't get it in the deal.

Now if Bohner caves that's different. But right now it looks like he is demanding Spending cuts and Reid is just staging this show to help Senate Dems in next years races.

Aren’t these bills supposed to originate in the house? Oh, I’m sorry. Stupid question. The house is irrelevant and boner is fine with it.

Who's fault is it that they cannot find a job? This government is actively working to prevent the creation of jobs, Obamacare is now preventing employers from hiring full time, instead can only hire to work 29 hours a week in order to avoid fines under Obamacare!

Now that the government is preventing Americans from working, the solution to the problem is to steal 6 billion dollars from the tax payers who are still working and give it to the moochers who cannot find a job for the last 100 weeks! Hell, why don't the government just pay Americans for ever not to work?

Instead of creating jobs by getting government off the neck of the American people who want to start jobs and end this communist health care crap, we are being made to pay Americans to sit in front of the tv with a bag of chips and a beer and draw unemployment for what another 100 weeks?

I have had it with the moochers who vote by what this communist party will give them for FREE!

“As someone who is older and has been unemployed for over a year I thank you.”

If you are doing something (looking for work) for over a year and it doesn’t work, you clearly have to change your strategy.

How about moving to somewhere where there is work? For example, the unemployment rate in Fargo, ND is about 2%. Here in Silicon Valley, CA, every business I see has a help wanted sign on their window.

How about learning a skill? Tax season is coming up and tax preparers are looking for people. The illegals working in McDonalds all want to file their taxes for the earned income tax credit so combining Spanish with tax skills will get you a job. Go with the small businesses. They are a lot more flexible than the big companies like HRBlock.

The bottom line is that unemployment benefits are not designed for long term. If you cannot find a job at all, then you need to apply for welfare.

RE :”Aren’t these bills supposed to originate in the house? Oh, I’m sorry. Stupid question. The house is irrelevant and boner is fine with it.”

This particular bill is not meant to be signed into law.

The purpose of this bill is to put Senate Republicans who are in blue or purple states in hot water with their state voters, or possibly their primary voters, put them on defensive to give Dems an edge in 2014.

Reid, Obama and the rest at MSNBC been plotting this all though the break.

Make GOP Senators vote on stuff that polls popular that Dems like, and conservatives dont, give-aways.

just political.

-- So if this is a spending Bill then how can it originate in the senate? --

US Constitution

All bills for raising Revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives ...
US Const, Article I, Sec. 7

Notice the Constitution does not say "all bills for spending shall originate in the house."

If you been listening to Obama, Reid and the rest's talking points they been *defending* the poor unemployed, ‘through no fault of their own’, victims of ‘the Great Recession’, from GOP attacks.

It goes :”These people are not lazy. They work hard EVERY day looking for a job (two years straight!). They need that money for food for their kids and rent and for gasoline to go on job interviews. I hope our Republican colleagues stop their attacks on these victims and show some compassion for their situation. Its the humane thing to do”

I am amazed at the despicable immorality of our governmetn.

The problem starts with Ryan's terrible deal-making and HOR reps voting for it. They had to know that the dems would over-ride the parts involving handouts that don't solve anything.

The HOR 'pubs never should've voted for it to begin with.

I'm fairly sure nothing is further from the truth.

Not so sure about that. Sure, there are struggling people. But my guess is that many of these people have a background of a welfare culture where they just take the money because it's there.

If the bias starts to move against these funds, only then will many of these people realize that they have to change their mentality. Nothing else will do it for many of them.

Again, I do feel sorry for the real victims caught in the mess.
