CNN Poll: GOP Has Edge in Early Midterm Indicator (55% support anti-Obama candidates)
CNN ^ | Thursday, December 26, 2013 | Paul Steinhauser

Democrats have lost their advantage and Republicans now have a slight edge in the battle for control of Congress, according to a new national poll.

A CNN/ORC International survey released Thursday also indicates that President Barack Obama may be dragging down Democratic congressional candidates, and that the 2014 midterm elections are shaping up to be a low-turnout event, with only three in 10 registered voters extremely or very enthusiastic about voting next year.

Two months ago, Democrats held a 50%-42% advantage among registered voters in a generic ballot, which asked respondents to choose between a Democrat or Republican in their congressional district without identifying the candidates. That result came after congressional Republicans appeared to overplay their hand in the bitter fight over the federal government shutdown and the debt ceiling.

But the Democratic lead evaporated, and a CNN poll a month ago indicated the GOP holding a 49%-47% lead. The new survey, conducted in mid-December, indicates Republicans with a 49%-44% edge over the Democrats.

"Virtually all the movement toward the GOP has come among men," CNN Polling Director Keating Holland said. "Fifty-four percent of female voters chose the Democratic candidate in October; 53% pick the Dem now. But among male voters, support for Democratic candidates has gone from 46% in October to just 35% now."

Republicans have a 17-seat advantage in the House and Democrats hold a 55-45 majority in the Senate.

Another GOP advantage is the President's standing with the public: 55% of registered voters say that they are more likely to vote for a congressional candidate who opposes the President than one who supports him and four in 10 say they are likely to vote for a candidate who supports Obama.

The democrats are going to be creamed even when the rinos try to sabotage the election.

So true. However I still wonder what O will try to give away in an attempt to win voters back. He's already done the O'phone & cash for clunkers (which gutted the used car market). Food stamps are at an all time high and O'Care "will save you $2500/year" is a bust. So I wonder what he'll give away next.

Exactly. Expect a number of prominent GOPe loud-mouths to champion Obama’s worst. That ought to fix it.

The Democrats ain’t seen nuttin yet! Right now is just the lull before the Cat 5 hurricane called “BamaKare” hits the U.S. next year, because in early 2014, horror stories will start emerging about people with obama-cancelled insurance not being able to continue their chemotherapy or dialysis treatments, trauma patients being denied care at designated trauma centers, and hospital emergency departments being swamped with people unable to see their doctor.

This will start happening in January, become a deluge in February, and turn into a tsunami of death and suffering by March 2014, at which time voters will start hunting Democrats down in the streets with pitchforks and dogs. And a well-deserved hunt it will be too, because people are going to needlessly die as obamacare sends our existing health care system spiraling into complete and total chaos.

Convenient poll to dissuade the Reps from any confrontation with the WH on the debt ceiling increase. Our GOP political betters will counsel us on keeping the focus on Obamacare and not creating any difficulties with an increase in the debt ceiling. Just kick the can down the road again.

2014 could be reminiscent of the shellacking the Dems took in 2010,

or

2014 could be reminiscent of the kerfuffle that kept the GOP from gaining control of the Senate in 2012.

It is a toss-up. Dems seem to have a major problem: Obamacare. Pubbies have a history of pulling defeat out of the jaws of victory.

The biggest problem the GOP has is the GOPelites who like their status quo and their turn at the Washington money troughs.

Didn’t we hear all this before in the run-up to the 2012 elections?

Nope. People with good turnout models understood that Obama was the prohibitive favorite and would have reasonable coattails for Congressional and Legislative candidates. At least for Presidential elections, Democrats have completely eliminated the turnout advantage that Republicans traditionally enjoyed, between the HUGE advantage of early voting and excellent identification, tracking and day-of contact and transportation.

The game for 2014 is all about whether Democrats can find a way to move their turnout gains into non-Presidential years, and whether Republicans have any turnout enhancing response. This is not really a technology or financial question, but rather a policy and political ones. The Democrat turnout engine worked in 2012 because minority voters and single women wanted Obama re-elected with a red-hot intensity. This enthusiasm doesn't easily transfer to the rich old white people who will contest (as incumbents or potential successors) the Democratic seats at risk in 2014.

Obama, Reid and Pelosi are going to try to make the election a referendum on House Republican "obstructionism" on the three key itmimmigration, minimum wage, and Obamacare fixes.

I’m surprised its not already a little more one sided.

Democrats are so tribal that Obama could round up their families and put them in work camps for no reason and they would still blindly pull the lever for him.

It’s really quite a cynical game the GOPe is playing with conservatives. Push amnesty/legal immigration while the kenyan is the WH figuring conservatives will still vote against him no matter what they do.

We saw in the “budget” deal that the GOP is waving the white flag on everything for the next 3 years. There is simply no reason to vote GOP if they intend to play bystander to history. Ever since the shutdown the stooges in the GOPe have doubled down on their loser tip toe to the election strategy. Rewarding them with support will just encourage more craven political calculations that harm us.

53% of women are married to the Government. It’s an abusive relationship, but they’ll take the battered wife status if it means free and unending gifts.

If corporate America supports the Republicans, then they should all join together and offer massive sales on Election Day. The women will be so busy shopping that they won’t have time to vote! It would be a republican sweep at the polls.

That is a point we need to slap the RINOs and Liberaltarians up side the head with!

They are voting conservative based solely on social issues like guns, the queer agenda, and abortion. That is what those stupid bastards can’t get through their thick skulls!!
