Senators are going after Target in the wake of a massive hacking that compromised the credit card numbers of some 40 million customers between Nov. 27 and Dec. 15.

The numbers were swiped from U.S. stores and not from Target.com purchases, the retail giant said. There was no indication that PIN numbers on debit bank cards were compromised.

Schumer and Blumenthal are happy to attack Target.

Haven't heard them (or many in the media) show concern over the MASSIVE SECURITY BREACHES in the obamacare web site.

Senators need to shaddap and read their local newspaper.

Weak US card security made Target a juicy target

NEW YORK — The U.S. is the juiciest target for hackers hunting credit card information. And experts say incidents like the recent data theft at Target’s stores will get worse before they get better. That’s in part because U.S. credit and debit cards rely on an easy-to-copy magnetic strip on the back of the card, which stores account information using the same technology as cassette tapes.

Yes, the industry is moving toward chips in cards. A bit behind Europe in that technology, but it is coming and it is expensive.

Couldn’t a thumb print be stored w/ your account info? You go to make a purchase, place your right thumb on the screen.
No match? No purchase.

Yes. Mine are already on file. A thumb, not a set.
Make it a picture then. Something unique to the cardholder.

They need to embed a chip in the card and make its use be accompanied by a PIN number. That's how it is in Europe.

Good Lord, man! You want to require a PICTURE ID as part of a retail purchase? Do you realize the slippery slope that would become. The next thing you know, some kooks would be wanting to require a Photo ID in order for a citizen to VOTE!!
Oh, the inhumanity.
Isn’t is enough that an American citizen is NOW required to show a photo ID to cash a check, pay by check, rent a car, pay for food by check just to name a few times we must dig for our license.
On a recent errand/shopping weekend, I counted 7 times I had to show my ID with picture.
Isn’t there a violation of the constitution somewhere in there?

If the Republicans had a brain among them, they would jump all over publicly supporting Schumer’s proposal, naming him and being all bipartisan loveydovey, plus the exact same treatment, in the same breath, for scrutinizing Obumblercare security, and holding ITS creators directly and personally accountable for the massive damage they have done, and the outrageous exposure they have created, all for EXACTLY the same reasons Schumer wants to come down on Target.
-Is this sentence long enough yet?
