Officer shoots and kills attacking pit bull

SAN DIEGO — A San Diego police detective shot and killed a pit bull Wednesday in Mount Hope after the canine bit him and an FBI agent.

The officers were doing a probation compliance check at a home on 40th Street near F Street about 9 a.m. when the dog got loose, San Diego police Lt. Eric Hays said.

A woman at the home had put the animal and another dog into a room, Hays said.

When she went to move the animals to another location the pit bull ran outside and charged the officers who were standing in a side yard.

The dog bit the detective on the left leg and when he tried to push it away it bit him on the right hand, Hays said.

The FBI agent then hit the dog with a baton and it also bit him on the hand.

At that point the detective drew his gun and shot the animal three times, Hays said.

The dog, a 13-month-old male, died at the scene with the FBI agent’s glove still in its mouth, the lieutenant said.

The officers were taken to a hospital for treatment of their wounds.

When I get attacked I attack back.

I think they showed more restraint than I would have. I would not be inclined to allow a dog to bite me multiple times before I defended myself. Just sayin.

Well, my only point is regarding simple probation compliance checks are generally conducted by those from the probation departments.

Who knows what they do now...

In any event it seems this was justified....

Too bad so many *people* have made this breed of dog mean.

Which link? The one from the original story or from ABC?

Here's another. The FBI participated in probation compliance checks here also. I don't think it's all that unusual.

I agree. I would think that also. But there may be more to this story that the reporter did not include. Like it could have been more of a widespread compliance check that required multiple agencies. That seems to be the reason behind using them. And I agree on the dog issue. I know from personal experience that Pits can make great pets. It’s the people who own them that have either made that particular dog aggressive or have bred the aggressiveness into them. Sad. My old Pit Clem was an awesome dog who ran loose in my yard and on the beach. Everyone loved Clem and he would never have bitten his own fleas. I think of Clem every time I hear someone say how inherently bad Pits are.

That was also a large scale operation.

What is notable, is all these agencies below were involved, yet according to your link, only two people were arrested....wow

The ABC link from dragnet2.

Childporn explains a lot about who all they sent in.

That does not compute.

Yep...I too have known pits who were simply really nice dogs...

I have nothing but contempt for the gangster mentality which makes some pits mean.

Only 2 arrested? Must have been some bad asses. Law enforcement must take extra care when dealing with Holder's people.

A good example of how the criminal few cost the taxpayers a fortune.

Not sure why the ABC link won't work for you. It's the #1 hit on this Google results page. Note; it's ACORN housing.

My son had pit bulls. They were well treated and friendly to me. My son said one always need a good grip on the leash when out because they were bred to kill other dogs. He would have to warn owners who would let their dogs come prancing up to his dog to stay well back. Once his 3 dogs were home alone and got into a dominance fight. A $1,000 vet bill.
I also wonder who provided the information on the dogs actions. The police involved or independent witnesses.

Here's another link to the same story I linked above. It says 71 officers were involved and there was just one arrest. I guess the perps were found to be in compliance?
