Nevada sage grouse critic calls feds closed-minded

Elko County Commissioner Grant Gerber suggested the BLM and U.S. Forest Service are seeking comment on a regional sage-grouse conservation plan only to placate critics of the push to protect the greater sage grouse, which is found in 11 Western states, including Nevada, Utah, Idaho and Oregon.

Ranchers, miners, energy developers and state officials fear restrictions on the use of public lands in sage grouse habitat would have deep economic consequences in the rural West. Former Republican Assemblyman John Carpenter said he believes the government is determined to list the chicken-sized game bird as part of a bigger strategy to lock up federal lands.

Sounds like the spotted owl or delta smelt version 2.

Sigh.

The Feds need to be made to turn over 5% of their lands to the respective States for the next 20 years or so.

They ecos could hire chicken farmers to raise millions of these birds [ or stop killing endangered eagles and condors if their goal was to protect birds ].

Instead, the thieves want our private property.

Can we make it 10% for 10 years or 25% for 4 years. Hey let’s get right to the meat and make it 50% for 2 years.

After the performance of the NPS and USFS during the “shutdown”, the Feds are shown to be poor stewards of the People’s lands.

The other day I had 50 quail in my back yard. I don’t see any problem with just raising a hutch full of sage hens and turning them loose for the neighbors to feed. The damn things are like chickens. They are great to have in the area because they eat all the bugs.

“They ecos could hire chicken farmers to raise millions of these birds...”

Yeah, if they could get people interested in eating the damn things we’d have millions of ‘em.

How about 100% in perpetuity. What business does the Federal Government have owning land?

This sage-grouse thing is part of a larger plan to keep us, citizens of the U.S., and real owners of Federal land off our own land. No more four wheeling, hunting, or recreating on these lands. This also affects a huge of area of north eastern California where thousands of tourists come to see the spectacular scenery of the Eastern High Sierra and spend money in our small tourist oriented towns.

the Oregon Natural Desert Association has convinced the U.S. Bureau of Land Management to to fork over $305,000 in attorney fees in a lawsuit over grazing in Oregon’s Louse Canyon area .

ONDA wanted to shut down grazing in the area, which is managed by BLM, due to alleged harms to the greater sage grouse, a candidate for federal protection under the Endangered Species Act.

The group also demanded the tearing down of fences and shutting down of cattle watering structures in the Louse Canyon Geographic Management Area, claiming they disturbed the bird’s habitat.

Sage chickens are sooo rare and endangered, that the last time I drove the road from Deeth to the Bruneau River in Nevada, I ran over over 20 of them and most certainly not on purpose, the darn things are worse than bunny rabbits. There are endless quantities of them all over the state, from the Sheldon Antellope Range all the way across the Mary’s River.

Unless the fence is higher than the birds can fly, the fence does not seriously negatively impact a bird.

Doesn’t anyone attend these meetings and make fun of these fools?

After all, what is a cattle fence to a bird?

No, they need to turn over 95% forever.

The Fedgov does not need land for any purposes other than the enumerated ones.

The workers and peasants need to be moved to small apartments in urban areas. They can't appreciate the beauty of nature, anyway.

How bout the states one by one, offer the Feds the purchase price at the time of purchase plus the interest rate at that time till now? Be interesting to watch the Feds wiggle out of that one. I hate to capitalize Feds.

Merry Christmas!

How about 85% of NV being turned back over? The feds control about that in the state. I seem to remember someone saying it was part of the agreement to be granted statehood.

We had a similar problem, (on a different species), with the damn Feds down here.

The Feds respond quickly to Liberal pressure groups, with little regard to field evidence.

The Feds are not interested in, have no money for, and have no time to do field research.

What the Feds’ main guideline is what they call “Use the best Science available.”

Down here that was a sorry thumbnail study dating back to the 1960s.

We challenged them on their lack of field knowledge, lack of recent Scientific studies, and brought in landowner, State and University professionals who volunteered to do their own Scientific studies.

Eventually, the Feds backed off.
