I think I read that Rush is leaving KFI in LA for a small station.WOR is obviously a major NYC station but IIRC is ain't quite in the same league as WABC.And in LA he's gonna be on a minor station. He tried the same move in Boston a few years ago..left a major station and went to an unknown one. That station went belly up and he's back on the major station.

Limbaugh is going to KTLK, a 50,000 Watt station. I wouldn't call an LA station you can pick up in Phoenix a "minor station." Brush up.

I pick up WABC 770 in Charlotte!

And south of Charlotte, too, like Parris ISland!

Seriously! Listened to Mark Levin a month ago on a trip there

If it means anything...I have always been able to get 710 better than 770 in Cherry Hill, NJ. (Directly east of Philly) However, as the years go on, that signal is getting fainter, and also more polluted with noise.

I can see a relaxation in RF interference regulation for electronics, and maybe something sinister in all those solar panels that popped up in the state of NJ a2-3 years ago to purposely hurt reception, although I have no proof of this.

He’s good. He seems to know everyone, too. Hey, Jerry, what’s new? What’s up Regis, how’s Joy doing? I think in the end WABC misused him.

Only on FR is a radio host moving to a 50KW station considered a move to a “puny” station.

50Kw is the limit, too, they aren’t allowed to go higher in power transmission :)

For AM, yes. “Clear channel” stations (not to be confused with Clear Channel Communications, the company). KTLK, Limbaugh’s new home in LA, is 50KW and reaches Phoenix at night. Guy upthread said he was going to a “minor station.” Proof one doesn’t need to know the first thing about something to talk about it (I do that myself sometimes so I can’t be too hard on him).

By "small" I'm thinking more along the lines of listenership.Just because a station can be picked up 200 miles away (presumably at night) doesn't mean that anyone that far away is listening. In fact,it doesn't mean anyone 15 miles away is listening. My understanding is that this station has a history of comparatively sparse listenership. If I'm correct in that belief that qualifies the station,IMO,as being "small".Of course when Rush arrives their listenership,at least from 0900 to 1200 Mon-Fri will be respectable...if not enormous.

Again, brush up. Phoenix isn’t 200 miles from LA.

In a large market talkie, listenership is more about who is on than how powerful the station is. A station is “big” because limbaugh is on it, so KTLK is not going to have small listenership for long. I’m sure he’ll be a better draw than the Air America remnants he replaces.

But to call a 50KW clear channel station “minor” or “small” is just plain ignorant. They are the giants out there in flyover country.

There's at least one recent case where that hasn't been true.A few years ago Rush switched from a top Boston station (tops in terms of listenership/ratings) to a basically unknown station.IIRC that station had recently been acquired by Rush's syndicator. It also signed at least one other big name (Hannity?) at the same time. Those two big names lasted about two years on the new station before it went belly up...it's now playing looped comedy tracks 24/7.Rush is back on that original top station.Boston certainly isn't as big a market as LA of course but it is a major market (#7 in the nation IIRC).

I can understand how one can get the impression a 50KW AM radio station is “minor” because Stephanie Miller is on it. ;^)

When you’re out in the sticks of Riverside County, the 50KW matters a lot.

Did not Rush moved to the “Howie Carr” station, WRKO?

I have heard that WRKO begins to “fade out” come nightfall from Mr. Carr.

WRKO has to push their signal north and south at night to protect other stations in places like Toronto, Binghamton, Baltimore, and Charlotte. Howie jokes about not being heard much further west than Kenmore Sq. Boston. But a few years ago I was driving around to the NW of Boston on ML King Day; WRKO had a Celtics game and Howie (on his own flagship) wasn’t on till 5:30 or so. I was able to get Howie on a station from Fitchburg MA
but that faded as I started to get closer to Boston. Howie’s
Worcester affiliate WCRN 830 wasn’t carrying him yet.

But it was true—I could barely hear WRKO to the NW
as it started to get dark.

It probably won’t happen, but if WRKO simulcast on a powerful FM it would help. It did happen one time though—
on Apr 15, the day of the Boston bombings, sister station
WEEI 93.7 with a powerful signal simulcast WRKO/Howie (and at 7 pm Jeff Kuhner came in).

Anyway, yes, WRKO’s problems at night. People can hear it via smartphone apps like TuneIn.

Libs have been saying "no wonder we don't get good ratings on KTLK because the signal isn't as good as KFI". Once the news broke about the move: "ha, Rush is going to a station you can't get in their parking lot..." Well here are the signal patterns--approx.--for Rush's new home KTLK 1150, which will indeed cover a lot of people...

Day

Night

He may have other affiliates in surrounding areas...well Rush is on 9-noon out there anyway, but I showed both charts just in case

Yes,it was WRKO and, yes, you're partially correct on the fadeout issue. In a nutshell the fadeout issue goes like this...between sundown and sunup WRKO is required to reduce their power as are,IIRC,many other AM stations. My understanding is that during this reduced power broadcasting their signal still comes in gangbusters north and south of the city. It's my understanding that RKO comes in gangbusters at night in Maine and on Cape Cod.The problem is that the most heavily populated suburbs of Boston are located *west* of the city. For me,being not too far west of Boston (certainly a lot closer than is Maine),RKO is useless to me after sundown. But I listen on the internet so it isn't an issue with me.Also,he's syndicated on a number of New England stations including one in Central Massachusetts.

And by day WRKO has a great signal, etc.

Here’s what happened:Clear Channel picked up WKOX AM 1200 and WXKS AM 1430. In Oct of 04 they put progressive talk on both, and that lasted 2 years and 2 months. Dec of 2006, they both go to Spanish language stuff. March of 2010, they debut “Rush Radio 1200”—with call letters of WXKS (AM); AM 1430 becomes WKOX and stays Spanish—with an improved signal on 1200, morning host Jeff Katz and afternoon host Jay Severin, etc. It did so-so in ratings.

Finally the word came that they decided to stop what was then “Talk 1200” —Rush and Coast to Coast went back to RKO,
and a temp format of political gaffes ran followed by all-comedy. Then Bloomberg decided to buy time on 1200 so they are now business radio. The 1200 signal isn’t too bad in some locations, by day at least.

As for prog talk a guy named Jeff Santos bought time on AM 1510 but that fell apart (I guess Boston liberals still can hear it via NPR!) As of now in Blue New England, prog talk commercial stations are only in Western MA, Brattleboro VT,
a small FM in Concord NH, and Bangor ME (horrors! owned by Stephen King). Boston, nope. It don’t work....

Yes and in addition near sunset in some places like where I am in Beverly (E of the antenna in Burlington) yeah it comes in OK but you hear the other stations mixing with it in the background. Especially this time of year.
