Unarmed student shot dead by cop after asking, ‘Oh, you’re going to shoot me?’

A 23-year-old Texas university student was shot dead by a police officer during an altercation in which the unarmed and usually mild-mannered student allegedly assault the officer and asked, “Oh, you’re going to shoot me?”

The officer did in fact shoot him six times, killing him.

Robert Cameron Redus is an honors student at the University of the Incarnate Word, a private Catholic institution in San Antonio, Texas. Redus’s friends describe him as “not aggressive,” “gentle,” and “well-liked,” according to local news.

UIW police officer Chris Carter pulled over Redus at 2:00 a.m. on Friday night for unknown reasons. The argument between the two quickly became heated, and Redus attacked, according to an Alamo Heights Police Department press conference. Redus successfully wrestled Carter’s police baton out of his hands, and started beating him over the head with it.

Carter reacquired the baton, and told Redus that he would open fire if the student refused to surrender. According to Police Chief Richard Pruitt, Redus charged the officer once again, forcing Carter to shoot him.

A neighbor who overheard the exchange said that Redus asked the officer if he was going to shoot.

“’I heard [a man] say, “Oh, you’re gonna shoot me?” like sarcastic almost,’” said the neighbor.

Carter fired six times.

Devastated friends described Redus’s alleged behavior that night as strange, given the student’s usual demeanor.

“He’s not an aggressive person at all,” said Sarah Davis, in a statement to local news. “The story just doesn’t really make sense to any of us.”

The officer in question has been placed on leave pending an investigation. The university said that Carter has an “extensive law enforcement background.” But according to the San Antonio News, Carter has held eight different jobs in his eight years as an officer.

The police department did not respond to a request for comment.

Comment: I guess the kid won't smart off to a cop anymore. ((groans))

Strange story. The Daily Mail article linked above has links to a couple of SAT Express-News pieces on the situation as well.

I suspect one of the new wave of psychotic drugs such as 'bath salts' may have played a part in this.

There are videos in the cars or on cops these days, so lets see and hear what happened.

If that’s true, the officer acted properly.

The kid must have been White, since there’s no hypocritical outrage out there.

This kid was shot by a University of the Incarnate Word campus cop but was shot OFF-CAMPUS by the cop? Something is very smelly about this whole thing.

Anyone have a picture and background on the cop?

A cop with eight jobs in eight years? Alarm bells, flashing lights, sirens screaming! There’s a problem here.

Well, that should be easy enough to check. A police baton is not a pillow.

Bath salts again?

The kid was hitting the cop with the baton. That is a weapon.

I wonder why the camera wasn't working?

"While the camera on the police cruiser was out, audio was still working which captured Carter warning Redus 56 times to stop resisting arrest, 14 times to place his hands behind his back and three times that he was under arrest."

From the Daily Mail

If a rogue officer, maybe he and Redus deserved one another.

Of course the British press has a more complete article:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2520586/Campus-officer-shot-dead-unarmed-student-Cameron-Redus-says-felt-life-danger.html

It seems like you always to have to go international press to a more complete news story.

There doesn’t seem to be much evidence of what happened. If this is all they have, the DA may choose not to pursue this. The autopsy might help.

If this kid attacked the cop as they contend...then there will be evidence to support it. If the policeman was in fear for his life "after," the attack, then the Police Officer should have a bloddied head and marks from the beating he received with the baton.

In addition, there will be a video from the police officer's vehicle that should coaberate this story.

If these types of things are not established as evidence...if they are strangely missing...then I will begin to conclude that the officer's story is not correct.

The reports of this officer's other troubles are not something that lends credence to the "extensive law enforcement background," they are claiming. If he has had six or eight jobs in eight years, and had to change because of his troubles...perhaps he should not be out interfacing with the public as a law enforcement officer in the first place.

But all of that has to be established.

Clearly, this kid's prior history and what is being alleged do not match up...but that does not mean something was not going on in his life that drove him to behave badly. Time and evidence will tell what actually occurred.
