Smith & Wesson Can Still Defy the Odds By Spencer Jakab

Updated Dec. 10, 2013 12:17 a.m. ET

America's largest gun maker will get some extra attention this week. Four days after it unveils fiscal second-quarter results on Tuesday, the nation will mark the anniversary of last December's school massacre in Newtown, Conn.

The shooting's effect on Smith & Wesson Holding Corp.'s SWHC -0.08% financial fortunes shows how wrong the market's initial reaction was. The stock fell sharply as the grisly details of the rampage emerged, but it has bounced back by 58% since its trough four sessions later. It is up 26% since the day before the shootings, right in line with the S&P 500.

A good Smith and Wesson revolver is as good as gold IMO. I could talk endlessly about them. The scandium aluminum J frames are the easiest guns to carry you’ll ever find. In a Galco outside the waist band holster, you’ll forget it’s there.

That is a pretty hand cannon.

I haven't fired the .50 yet.

RGR is a far better investment IMO long term. They pay a nice dividend, but more importantly, they have zero debt. Not to mention a strong product pipeline.

A model 14 combat master in .38 S&W with 158 gr. SJWC P+ and 4 inch barrel pak gripes. I know it’ old school but it always works and it’s like pointing your finger at a target. Also fits great in a shoulder rig when flying.

I wouldn’t give up my Mod 28 Highway Patrolman for anything since I bought it in 1973 . Four pounds of S&W craftsmanship.

As a reloader, I wish S&W did not put the cylinder groove directly over the round. They are great with factory spec ammo but not great for more adventuristic loads.

That being said, they are my favorite guns to shoot.

I have never had one blow up on me but I have never exceeded SAAMI specs either (AFAIK). When I feel adventuresome, I just break out the X frame .500 mag. Presently setting up to reload .300 win mag speaking of adventure.

Smith and Wesson STILL Sucks.

I bought a Thompson /Center Encore 6 months ago, not knowing that T/C was now owned by S&W.

The .308 barrel wouldn’t extract fired cartridges. They machined the groove for the extractor too deeply. I could have / should have fixed it myself, but I’m sick of having to fix nearly every dang thing that I get that was engineered or manufactured poorly.

So I contacted T/C - S&W. For a month they denied that the barrel was theirs. Said that the serial number / SKU was not one of theirs. They more or less accused me of being stupid and/or a fraud, or that the place I bought it (a major mail order distributor)sold me a counterfeit barrel. Then they started ignoring my emails.

So I contacted the distributor, who got them to finally admit it was their barrel, and issue me a RMA.

Sent the barrel back, and two months later I got the ‘repaired’ barrel back. Their highly skilled technician had placed a shim under the extractor. The shim fell out during shipment.

I contacted them again, and demanded a NEW, properly functioning barrel. They ignored me , until I once again got the distributor to contact them on my behalf. After “discussing my case with senior management” they graciously decided that they would exchange it for a new barrel, and issued another RMA.

Fedex confirms that my second RMA was delivered to S&W a month and a half ago. I have no new barrel, no old barrel, which I could have fixed myself, and they are again ignoring my emails.

You can bet that I’ll never buy a S& W product again. Too bad for them. I WAS in the market for a .460 Guess I’ll go for a Magnum Research or maybe a Freedom Arms in .475 Linebaugh

Sorry to hear that.

I don’t and would not sell anything. You know the saying “Opinions are just like a-holes. Everybody’s got one.” I just buy em. I always carried Smiths at work but I’m not partial to any particular brand.

I recently had bolt issues with a new Kahr M1 carbine. I sent it back and Kahr checked it out and replaced the bolt. Works like a gem now.

I’m going to be doing comparison shopping for a M&P 9mm vs. a Glock 19 soon.

Thanks.

I’ve only owned a few, and none of them did I particularly like, although they weren’t horrible either. I haven’t forgiven them for their political crap of several years ago, despite new ownership and management, and I wouldn’t have purchased the T/C if I had known they were part of S&W.

But this episode has cemented that bad feeling forever.
If I get any more barrels for the Encore, they will be Begara. MGM or EABCO.

Good luck with your 9MM purchase, whichever way you go.

The Model 28 Highway Patrolman. That is the finest "N Frame" revolver S&W ever built in my opinion (outside of the Performance Center)... What time they didn't spend on the outside (flat finish instead of high polish blue) was spent on the inside. I have two of them and they are by far the smoothest of all my "N Frame" collection.

Don't ever part with it if you can help it... They haven't made them since 1986.

The special edition engraved ones are a joke - a little engraving, some gold leaf and they ask $2,000 or a $600 gun. Then they need to be handled like the delicate little safe queens that they are.

You'll NEVER get your money back on those.

“You’ll NEVER get your money back on those. “

If such firearms from makers are sold as an investment, which I do not believe that they are then that would be fraudulent. However, most purchasers of those firearms just buy them for their uniqueness and nothing more and not interested in getting their money back.

Why would anyone want to sell their firearms now anyway?
