For almost a decade now, Chris Matthews has served as a barometer for baby-boom progressives' attitude toward Barack Obama -- from the "thrill" that went up his leg when he heard the presidential candidate speak in 2008 to the utter disappointment following last October's debate in Denver.
That's why Matthews' interview with Obama, which takes place at 2 p.m. today and airs at 7 p.m. on MSNBC, is a crucial one for the president, and for MSNBC.
For Obama: The last time the MSNBC vet interviewed Obama, at West Chester University in 2008, it was a love-in, the "thrill" having traveled up the leg and into the head and the heart. "How many of you are for this gentleman!" Matthews asked the audience.
Things have changed, obviously. 'Hope' and 'Change' gave way to insularity and ineffectiveness, and Obama is now perilously close to falling below a 40-percent approval rating. The liberal base is anywhere from frustrated to outraged over a litany of failed efforts and unfulfilled promises. The rollout of the Affordable Care Act, his signature legislation, continues to plague his legacy. The thrill, as Riley B. King said, is gone.
That doesn't mean you should expect Matthews to morph into Bill O'Reilly. He's still a liberal. Discussing the forthcoming interview this week, Matthews compared the disastrous Obamacare rollout to "a brilliant writer, perhaps, with a great theme who turns in a paper with a lot of misspelling or bad handwriting." That echoes Matthews' sentiments about everything Obama has done wrong, from the Denver performance to his reluctance to get on the phone with Republican lawmakers: Of course he's brilliant! He just can't close... often because he doesn't seem to want to. He lacks the Clintonian instinct.

Nelson Mandela has died.
What now?
he is going to ask easy questions and then ask about evil Republican plots to suppress the vote and stuff
The won will give a speech, no doubt, and send slo Joe to the funeral
Too late reschedule..
Probably the dozen or so people who watch him, will.
I want to see both of Chrissy’s hands on the table the entire time. He’s going to be very stimulated.
I believe Chris Matthews is a traitor to his friends, and as a journalist, to the American people.
I will never forget his interview with his “old friend” G. Gordon Liddy, in which he took advantage of Liddy’s age and gentlemanly nature and went on the attack... For no reason whatsoever but to please his handlers.
I had the misfortune of being seated next to Matthews at a restaurant not long ago and decided to leave the table, my reservation, and the restaurant.
I believe he is an abominable human being. I can’t even stand the sound of his voice.
Chris Matthews is truly everything that is wrong with the Mainstream media: lazy, immoral, opportunist, statist, racist, neglectful, treacherous.
LOLOL.
VP’s job = attend funerals.
The Marxist won’t use this as an excuse to travel to his native Africa?
So tingles licked and fawned over his magic negro ... is there something really new in significance with that spectacle?
Says who??
I don't quite see it either. But Christ Matthews does get really gushy about Obama. Maybe just how emotional he gets is an indication of something more than his monthly cycle.
It will be hyped and then forgotten as we head into whatever next week's scandal will be.
Obama is a very weak leader and everyone is finally aware of it.
“Probably the dozen or so people who watch him, will.”

The DUmmies are waiting with bated breath to hear dear leader.
All ten of them. I hope Charles keeps us posted.
Pissy chrissy is just another socialist mouthpiece who would dry hump obama if he had the chance, and would spout off socialist propaganda the whole time. The only reason he still exists in the US media market is the fact that there’s plenty of socialist sympathizers currently residing in DC.
Chris Matthews’ journalistic integrity aptly describes an oxymoron.
Chris Matthews might be the “moron” part of that, but that is to demean morons.
