Thanks for your reply- I am youngster compared to you, but I trained as watchmaker. I have been out of the business for almost twenty yrs. Lately on fine work I have been having trouble that I attributed to my eye sight.
Never occurred to me to me to question the lighting I was using.
Always worked under fluorescent tubes, made a bad assumption that CFLs provided same lighting.

I will have to go back and try again using either incandescent lighting or fluorescent tubes- should be able to determine if fine work is now beyond
my ability or if was just bad lighting.

This is why I appreciate fr so much.

I am always learning something and re-visiting assumptions that maybe incorrect

GE and Sylvania and Philips still sell the 72W halogens, which are nice. No circuit boards, dimmable, no mercury.

I’m still waiting for LED bulbs which can replace my 150 watt three way bulbs. I’ve seen 100 watt equivalents for $40, which should come down, but nothing brighter. I have been very happy with the 60 watt equivalents.

The halogen also come in lower wattages.

The 3 way halogens should still be available.

Plug in an energy efficient heater! Then after the chickens knock it over and burn down your house the insurance company can build you a more energy efficient house with a heated chicken coop!

Why would you want something as simple as a light bulb?
lol

How long is it on? I figured at 11¢ per kWh, an electrical device turned on continually for a year would cost the same in dollars as its power in watts: a 60 watt bulb costs $60 to keep on for a year. At the current price of 60 watt equivalent LED bulbs, they pay for themselves in a year if used 6 hours per day.

To be honest I don’t know. I do know this however, the cost of the LEDs will go down and the cost of electricity will go up. I like saving money so I’ll be a future buyer. I also understand why some people need the older bulbs. Free market is best.

That is a good rule of thumb.

But if used indoors, the true cost could easily more than double or half, or greater.

If you live in a hot climate, you run relatively inefficient AC to remove that heat.

If you live in a cold climate, that heat is replaced from another heat source.

So when living around Houston, running the AC in December, the pay back is far quicker.

When we lived north of Anchorage, Alaska, not so much.

An interesting aside. I do some custom motorcycle painting and under florescent light you can see every flaw. Take the piece out in the sunlight and you can’t see any(except the really bad ones. Don’t know why that is.

Multiple refrigerator/oven bulbs. I really don’t think anything other than incandescents could withstand the heat of the oven.

The article just proves how utterly unnecessary this government “nudge” was.

If the new technologies truly are better, cheaper, and use less energy, consumers will beat a path to them without the additional gun in their backs.

The electricity we use in lighting pales in comparison to what we use for a/c. As long as I can afford to keep my house at 70degrees all summer, I am doing it!

I was working on a lot being set up for christmas tree sales a few weeks ago (doing a geophysical survey). They were using flourescent screw in light bulbs for the lights all over the lot and the ground was becoming littered with broken ones.

I have a wood stove built by my grandfather that utilizes the bimetallic thermostat from a chick heater to meter the airflow into it over the course of burning a load of wood. He put one of those in all the stoves he built. They work awesomely :-)

“If you bought a CFL bulb three years ago, you might not know how good the technology is now,”

Good? I placed one in the socket, it burned out withing one day. Replaced it and the replacement burned out within two weeks.

Had a third one in a different socket and it burned out within 30 days.

Others have worked well, but not as well as advertized.

Cold weather here now. They should re-label 100 W bulbs as heat lights. Nothing works better to keep baby chicks warm or prevent water lines from freezing.

Such bulbs could come with the following warning;

WARNING: It is a violation of FEDERAL LAW to use this 100 W heat bulb as a light!

I run the furnace in my house about 8 months in the year. The idea that light bulb heat is “wasted” is usually untrue.

we need an eye doc (been up to many hours to remember spelling of the.gist) to chime in on the eye’s ability to discern different light refractions in different lighting, I am most certain there is one lurking about :)
