Correct. These programs are a crime.

Those snacks are designed to fill you up, with not much nutrition, granted, but the emphasis is fill you up cheaply. If you’re having trouble getting to the end of the month, that’s what happens.

Think of it as a foreign policy issue. How does it look to the rest of the world to have the richest nation on the planet restricting food? Not to mention how it looks to the voters to have the Republicans doing it.

Assume a virtue, if you have it not.

Who is restricting food? No one.

Get real.

And on the public relations point, don’t forget “Thatcher, Thatcher, milk snatcher!” She might have been OK except for that.

Feed them 3 MRE/day for a week and they’ll be begging ..

BEGGING!!!

for real food.

MREs aren’t too bad tasting, these days, but the gastro-intestinal effects must be experienced to be properly appreciated.

Never happen.

That is the truth. When dems and the media are more interested in touting the "plight" of a woman, wailing about having her benefits "slashed" from $649 to $611 a month for a family of four, and that she's now going to starve, you know they're not interested in facts, just presenting a victim mentality and trying to garner an emotional response. I wish somebody had the backbone to come out and say, if you can't feed a family of four on $600 a month, the only thing you're a victim of is stupidity or you're perpetrating fraud.

There’s no need to be rude.

The CBO and GAO are totally useless and should be shuttered. How many billions are wasted on these two totlly inept agencies?

But I think they should only be able to buy “minimum” essentials. The “No Frills” brand. No lobsters or filet mignon etc.

I agreed. Also things like soda, chips, candy. It really should be very restricted so that people want to get off it. Perhaps fruits, vegetables, beans, rice, grains, nuts, dairy products, bread, and no other pre-processed foods. It should not be "fun" to be on food stamps, which it kind of is.

We were on food stamps for a while, and really stretched it out, using price-match, sales, and discount stores to make it go as far as possible. The items I mentioned are the way we normally eat, but most people eat junk. A couple times we did get sirloin, but that was at 4.99 per pound. And we did get Papa Murphy's large cheese pizzas for $5 (with $2 off coupon) and then put on our own toppings. A side benefit in our state is that there's no sales tax charged.

Oh, and note that MREs are ridiculously expensive to produce -- over $5 each. That would be more than double the amount currently provided on food stamps. Having eaten them for a few months, they are tolerable, and even come with coffee and candy bars.

You found it fun to be on food stamps?

food stamps are leading to obesity. They should go back to government cheese blocks. The slacker surfer dude types buying the lobster wouldn’t show up. Many people wouldn’t. Kids on food stamps should be fed at school morning and lunch so no need for the grocery store money. the whole program should be reformed.
