Four people were killed and 63 injured when a Metro-North commuter train derailed Sunday morning in the Bronx, officials said.

All of the train’s seven cars came off the curved track about 100 feet north of the Spuyten Duyvil station around 7:20 a.m., MTA officials said. One car came to rest feet from the water.

Heard that earlier. seems that pulling would be the normal way or so conventional thinking would have one believe?

Grew up about a mile from there. Use to jump off the RR tressle into the headwaters of eastchester bay. That was over 50 years ago. Use to flaten out coins there too.

Sounds like Metro North uses their maintenance money the same way LIRR does. Paying fake disability claims.

There are some significant curves around the Spuyten Duyvil station. Heading northbound from the station the line curves to the right while following the Harlem river, and then marks a sharp (by railroad terms) turn to the right where the line follows the Hudson River up to Albany. Speed through that set of curves would not vary dependent on what passenger equipment, unless it is bilevel (due to center of gravity), which I really doubt can get through the Park Avenue tunnels to Grand Central Terminal.
My guess is that the train went into the curve too fast.

I can imagine what I-95 will look like tomorrow.....as it takes up the ‘slack’ (I assume they wont have the RR ready for traffic by tomorrow...I could be wrong.)

glad I live on LI.

The affected line goes along the Hudson, so it’s not I-95 that will be affected most, but I-87.

What I want to know is, how did it derail. I’ve been on the Metro North plenty of times, and their conductors are far better than those on the NYC public transit system, because they provide a smoother ride.

As of now, it would appear that the operator entered the curve before the Spuyten Duyvil station at an excessive rate of speed.

Is that the one Bob Petrie took to the office from New Rochelle?

Rob Petrie took the New Haven Railroad line, which was rolled into Metro North in 1970 along with the old New York Central lines. Everything out of Grand Central Terminal ended up rolled into the Metro North division of NYMTA thanks to the work of Gov. Nelson Rockefeller.

In the pilot for the "Dick van Dyke Show", Carl Reiner played the TV writer, and the title was "Man of the House". CBS liked the idea, but not Reiner as an actor, and producer Sheldon Leonard was looking for something for Dick van Dyke. Up until that point Dick had been doing guest stints, such as one on the old "Phil Silvers Show". This ended up being his shot at greatness.

“The conductor was given a 25-franc fine and the engine driver a 50-franc fine.”
What year did this happen? That was probably quite a bit of change back then! I’m surprised they survived-the coal car looks like it obliterated where the crew would be! (Unless they jumped off inside the station)

That’s really uncalled for. We don’t know that. Don’t we always deride the RATS that jump to conclusions without having all the facts?
