Yeah, they will point to the Reagan amnesty of 1986 which was popular with the entire Latino community, including the legal portion. But they conveniently forget that was a carefully targeted amnesty which covered no more than two million people who met specific circumstances including being self-sufficient contributing taxpayers. It also included stepped up border enforcement and accelerated deportations for those who had no business being here, all provisions which were conveniently ignored.
So popular that Republicans got a smaller percentage of the Hispanic vote in 1988 than they got in 1984...
There's no point in the GOP even mounting an appeal to the La Raza-type activist community. But they could firm up an important segment of the Hispanic vote by respecting the views and addressing the concerns of the established legal Hispanic voters.
Carving 5-to-10 pts out of the Democrats' Hispanic majority would be an important step forward.
